olive just adopted a new lovey at 18 months old -- a polka dot hoodie that my mom bought her at that age. she's had one since she was 6 months old. i think it's harder to introduce a new lovey, but maybe putting it in at naptime will help?

@NaturallyCathy: @birdofafeather: making your own lovey out of the blankets sounds like a great idea... I agree that the ones that a&a makes are really thin.

We have some other loveys comparable to the angel dear ones and my LOs just aren't into them but they love their blankies...

@birdofafeather: We've just about come to that conclusion but we would only make two - fold in half, cut that half in half, maybe trim it like the issies. That way they'd be double thick.

@TurtleDoves: No madness here! I just don't agree going lovey-less. Yes, he is an older baby, a toddler even but he's still a baby. He doesn't absolutely have to have his blanket with him wherever he goes but we always bring one with us and we always offer it to him. It's just something we use to say, 'Here, nothing's changed. You're safe. Everything else may be unfamiliar, but it's okay.'

He can go without it. He has before. If we lost or left one, he would not be devastated. It's healthy for him to be attached to them, I feel. After all, if he can find comfort in it instead of from me while I take care of baby sister? That's awesome.

My question wasn't really if we should get rid of them - we can't, we use them to swaddle little sister - but whether to try and introduce a new lovey or alter his current ones to make them smaller.

if you don't like the quality/price of the issie blankets, why not just make your own from the blanket he loves or the other patterns? then you would like like 4!

My son was about your son's age when he started really liking a lovey. I bought the AA "Issie" security blankets to keep him from tripping over the full sized AA blanket.

@turtledoves: for us, having a lovey with an older toddler (now 28 months) has never been a problem. He doesn't "need" to have it with him all the time, but he does like to sleep with all his loveys. I also find that they work well as transition items for daycare and when we travel and go to new places. Also, luckily, doesn't panic if we forget them.

@NaturallyCathy: don't get mad at me ;) buuuuut---
Maybe take this opportunity to wean the lovey altogether? He's 16m so if you got another lovey...he might get attached to that for awhile and eventually you might want them to separate a little anyways?
I might just use the safety excuse to wean the lovey attachment now.
I fear this for us because LO is addicted to the full size a&a as well. He's 7m and always has to have it in his carseat, stroller, wagon....,

@PrincessBaby: @T-Mom: I'm just afraid they're too thin. I looked at them the last time I was in Target and DH and I weren't that impressed with the thinness or quality for the price. That's why we were thinking the Angel Dear loveys that everyone's always raving about - multiple in case one's lost, a blanket and stuffed animal all in one, etc...

A&a makes loveys using the same material as their muslin blankies.. My DS really likes his (we had same issue as you and it worked out well). He was around your LOs age when we introduced it

H is 15 months old, nearly 16 months. For about 70% of his life, we've been putting him to bed and to nap with a full sized Aiden + Anais blanket folded up. This was cute because he would wake up and then 'hide' under his blanket so that we could play peek-a-boo. He would drag it from room to room much like a really long tail and evened earned the nick name 'Linus' from family members and friends.

Well, Linus with his blanket is going to get hurt. No, correction, he already has gotten hurt. Since he's such a little daredevil, he likes to run full speed through the house on his tip toes with the blanket trailing behind him. Only he doesn't keep it neatly folded like he used to. He has it unfolded and it's bigger than he is. And longer than he is. And it gets tied up around his ankles or his foot catches it and off he goes sailing into our hardwood floors.

This has caused more bruises over the past two and a half months than I care to count. So DH and I have come to the conclusion to keep the A+A blankets out of reach while he's awake and only offer it to him when he's about to take a nap or go down for the evening.

But I still want him to be able to go and grab something, a 'lovey' to comfort himself with while I'm dealing with baby sister. He's not particularly attached to any of his stuffed animals and I'd feel better if he had a blanket, like the Angel Dear loveys - but I don't know if it's too late to introduce a lovey at this age. Or if I'd just be wasting my money at this point. And I don't know which lovey to get him if I did get an Angel Dear lovey. Suggestions? Comments?
