We always used the toilet in the bathroom, we never used a smaller potty, because I didn't want to have to make this transition. I very much subscribe to the theory that "you should begin as you plan to continue." We have an integrated ring on the toilet seat and a booster step that fits around the base of the toilet.

@PTC: That's a lot of information but not really pertaining to my question. :P My question was regarding children who are already successfully using a little potty transitioning to the big potty.
I don't believe in "training" children this young to use the potty, or using reward systems, just allowing them to learn on their own pace. So I don't need information about "methods" or books or anything like that, just curious about when other children made the transition to being comfortable with the big potty.

DD use to be afraid of the toilet too, but we brought her with us to the bathroom so she has seen us use the bathroom. I always hold on to her and she usually asks if we can hold hands while she uses the bathroom. We bought a toilet seat (which she picked out) and for her and when we go out we cover the automatic flush with a toilet seat cover so it doesnt flush while she is on it.

@Arden: We aren't anywhere near ready to PT, but I put R on it the other night cause she wanted her diaper off and I was waiting for the water to be the right temp before I put her in the tub, so I sat her on it while holding her and she cried till I took her off. But day care has small toilets, so when she is ready, she will have to use the regular.

@bpcmarj: Yeah we planned on starting on the big potty but she was so scared of it! And she kept telling us every time she went and sometimes before she went, so we knew she was ready. We got her a little potty and she just figured it out on her own!

@Smurfette: Yes we tried that. She's terrified of the toilet itself (I think maybe the sound it makes when it flushes scared her when she was little). If I try to sit her on it she clings to me and screams "Noooo!"

@hilsy85: That's a fantastic idea, I'd never seen that thing before!

We actually started her on the big potty and didn't get her one that she could access herself until we were full on potty training. Now, she typically uses the big potty unless the bathroom is occupied and she really needs to go (we only have one bathroom) so she will use the little potty then.

We also have one of those potty seats for the big one, but she rarely uses it. She is also really big for her age, so she can get herself up on the potty without an issue.

Have you tried the little seat that attaches to the big seat? Then they make ones that you can travel with.

I would get her a travel potty, like a potette...also great if there are no toilets where you are going.

DD's been using her little potty for two weeks now with no accidents (during the day). However, she's still terrified if I try to put her on the big potty, so when we go out she's back in diapers.

Any tips for helping her transition to the big potty so that she can still use it when we go out? How did you handle this? It really bugs her to go in her diaper now so she tries to hold it the entire time we're out until we get home and she pees a ton. I know that can't be good for her. :/
