Yup we also aimed for LO to only be awake for 90 mins at a time at this age. So we didn't worry so much about how long he would nap, but rather focused on keeping track of the awake times.

My LO just turned 4 months, and he was going to bed late too. When we first tried an earlier bedtime, it also seemed like he would just fuss and cry longer, until his usual bedtime. So instead we started moving it up gradually, like 15 minutes earlier each night. We eventually moved bedtime from 9ish to 730.
My LO is the king of crappy naps, so even with a 730 bedtime, he needs 4 naps. I try to get him down 1-1.5 hours after his last nap. And that 4th nap is a bitch to get out of him! Sometimes he refuses that nap and so he's up for 2-2.5 hours before bedtime but I'm nervous to put him down any earlier at this point in fear of him getting up super early the next day!
So once he drops that nap, his bedtime will probably move to 7 or even earlier.
You will love the extra time you have to yourselves at night! Once we got to the 730 bedtime, my husband and I can actually hang out a little before going to bed!

Hope this works for you! Fiona's bed time is 8:30 (we take her up at 8:30 and she is usually asleep by 9). We work really hard to get her to sleep for a last nap that ends at 7:30 so that she's only up for 1 hr before we start the night routine. Any longer than that and she is way way worse at bedtime.

@Tanjowen: @Mrs. Bee: @lawbee11: @cheesetomywhine: Thanks everyone! I feel sort of dumb that it took me this long to realize this (bad sleep has been about 2.5 weeks but up until this weekend naps were awesome so we just made do). Oh well, hindsight is 20/20 right? Bedtime is in progress. Alice is not really having it, but she's dramatic about everything. Fingers crossed for a good night!

@twodoghouse: S will be 5 months Saturday (!) and he is up an hour to an hour and a half before bed. So last nap between 4/4:30, wake around 6 and bed 7/7:15. During day naps he is only up an hour to an hour fifteen.

I would definitely move their bedtime up. Around 12 weeks we moved M's bedtime from 8/8:30 to 7 and it's been that way ever since. You'll love it because you'll have so much more free time at night!

the maximum they should be up at that age is 1 1/2 hours. try to get them asleep by the time they've been awake 90 minutes. it was life changing for me at that age!

My LO's bedtime was at 9 p.m. until the 4 month sleep regression. Then we started having the same nap issue and pushed bedtime back to 6:30 p.m. and it eased things. He still woke up 3 x's a night to eat, but he went to sleep right after. My pediatrician told me that "sleep begets sleep," which seems to hold true for him so far. I agree with the other posters, they might be ready for that early bedtime now!

Also, kudos to you for getting two babies to sleep at the same time at any point, seriously! :)

@twodoghouse: my lo always goes to bed easily too, but when he is overtired that always means lots of night wake ups for us. Could be what is happening with you guys too! I hope that works for you! :) i know you could use the sleep!!

@twodoghouse: Mine has been up for hours when he wakes up in the MOTN too. It's new for him -- prior to 4 months he was sleeping most of the night. It's hit or miss though -- he will be up for hours overnight for a few nights, and then he'll go back to settling quickly (but still waking up). Super ready for the long wake ups to be gone!

His interval at the end of the day is pretty similar to his interval for the rest of the day. I count them from when he wakes up until he goes to sleep, so bedtime is included in the interval. At bedtime, we shoot for 2.5 hours, and he is just about 5.5 months old.

@Mrs. Lion: They've been getting up pretty regularly around 8ish, so we will try 8 pm then! They used to get up just once to eat then up around 6:30 but lately the second half of the night is up and down, up and down. Hopefully the early bedtime will help!

@wonderstruck: Strangely they go down really easily at bedtime. It's just that they've started not going back down after night wake ups (which is new for them). I definitely thing they need a change though. I was probably hanging on to the late bedtime for too long because it worked so well up until recently! Change is so scary! It's hard with twins, too, because you can't just accommodate one baby - you have to figure out what they both need and just pray they won't want totally different schedules, haha.

Whoa, that is a really late bedtime! I think they are definitely trying to tell you they are ready for it to be scooted up to like the 7:30/8:00 time. 3 hours is about the absolute longest awake time my 4 month old could have handled without getting overtired and then having a super hard time falling asleep.

At 4 months probably no more than 2 hours. I cant remember exactly. It may have even been less. We only do 3-3.5 hours now at 18 months.

ETA bedtime for us at that age was 5:30-6. We had dropped the dream feed for lo by that point because it didnt work. He woke up once at 2 to eat and then slept until 6 am. I would backtrack 12 hours from their usual wake up time and call that bedtime.

And how old is your LO? I'm trying to adjust our napping/bedtime schedule to get some better sleep. In doing some reading, I think we are keeping our 4 month olds up way too long between last nap and bedtime. We usually start bedtime routine at 9:00ish and they are down in their cribs around 9:45ish. (Routine is bath, books, bottles, then nursing to sleep, holding upright for 20 min+ because of reflux).

Naps have been chaos lately (well, so is night sleep), but when they were napping well they would take two 2-hr naps, one 1-1.5 hr nap and sometimes one evening catnap of about 30-45 min. If they catnap it might be around 6-6:30ish and then they are up until bedtime starts at 9. If they don't catnap they take their last nap from 1:30-3:30ish usually? Then they may drift off during nursing in the evenings but not for more than 10-15 minutes at a time.

Lately they have pretty regularly fallen asleep for a nap later, around 7:30-8ish. I'm wondering if they're trying to tell us they are ready for that to be bedtime? We have previously tried scooting up bedtime, but they would just cry/fuss until 9:30ish anyway so we just spent the whole evening rocking, feeding, putting them down, picking them up, etc.

I know they are probably going through the 4 month sleep regression, and maybe we just need to wait it out, but if I'm doing things to totally mess up the chance for good night sleep I'd rather change it now. I just want to set them up for success, you know? They've been really good sleepers all along so now that things have fallen apart I feel clueless about baby sleep. I'm willing to take any and all tips except we're not willing to CIO and I'm not interested in giving up nursing to sleep at this time.
