My brother and I shared a room ever since he was born until I went to college--my parents bought cubicle dividers so we each had our "own" space but we could hear everything and if we got on a chair we could see over the wall (bad for sleepovers!)

It worked out and we still get along.

I'd say 7 or 8 as well. It also depends on the kids. But if you guys are only going to be in this house for a few years, I think it's totally fine.

I know me and my brother and sister shared a bed when we were like 2-3. Then me and my sister shared a room til we were 12. No issues there. I would be weirded out sharing a room with my brother any older than toddler I think.

My niece (8) and nephew (10) share a room and it's starting to become an issue. He's getting to the age where he wants privacy when he changes his clothes and things like that, and they both want to be able to decorate the room the way they want! They have plans to move into a bigger house soon, and I hope it really is *soon* because I can tell it's getting annoying!

A friend of mine two younger siblings shared a room until boy was about 11 or 12, and the girl was 10 or so. Basically when puberty hit and the two needed privacy. When wet dreams and cycles start time to separate.

We plan on having our kids share a room sometime in the next 1.5 years, not because we don't have the space but just because I think it's a good experience. We'll just play it by earand let them share as long as they want to.

My husband and his sister shared a room until she was 14 or so, maybe even 16. They both said it was no big deal and liked sharing a room. I'm sure my MIL taught them to be respectful of each others' boundaries and space when it came to private things. They are 2 years apart. I wouldn't be surprised if my SIL kept her clothes in her mom's room. I'm not sure how that worked out. But I have never heard DH or his sister complain about how they had to share a room.

The 'rule' was that for my SIL to be able to have her own room, she had to be able to open the window in the other room to escape safely, should there be a fire. She wasn't tall nor strong enough to do this until she was in her mid-teens. It was my MIL, DH, and SIL in a small trailer. They were poor and they just made it work.

@Mrs. Bee: I think it would be okay for a boy/girl to share a room until early elementary school (age 6 or 7)... but it is interesting to note that in order to be home study approved (for foster care or adoption) in our state, you have to agree to and have space for children of opposite genders to have their own rooms once the oldest child is TWO years-old. So, we will be converting our office/guest room into ill' CB's room and moving little sister into his current room.

@Mrs. Pen: right. I agree
I guess you can totally extend the time they share a room by teaching respect and boundaries. Knock before entering (even if it is your room) because your sister might be changing her pants? or might have friends over or whatever....things like that.

DD and DS will share a room once DS moves out of our room; they are 30 months apart. We plan to keep them together until DS is in school most likely; however we are working with DD to learn how to be modest.

I feel like in this city, anything goes. I don't think it would be an issue until at least puberty. One of my coworkers lives with his family of 4 in a studio! His kids aren't that young either, they're definitely both at least toddlers.

We are buying a 2bdr apt and have been thinking about this. I actually think it is better to let the kids share a bedroom until they get a bit older. Surely Charlie and Olive are too young to need their own space right now, if they shared, you could put away all that extra towards buying a 3 bdr place. Given the crazy prices of 3 bdrs in Brooklyn, you would probably save a fortune.

I would say just before puberty. I have a niece and nephew who wer sharing because they lived in a two bedroom space and the 12 year old boy started sleeping on the couch to get away from his 16 year old sister. I would aim a little earlier just so they get their own space sooner. We live in a three bedroom house so our boys will always share. We have an enclosed patio that has three room in it so when they are older if they want to spread out there will be some possibilities but those rooms aren't heated or air conditioned so we would have to make some changes.

I'm going through this! DD and DS share their room right now and they like it. But, DH and I said that when DS reaches kindergarten age, we think it'll be time to spilt them up. That way, if DS wants to have someone sleep over, he can. Our 3rd bedroom is in the basement and we don't want either of them down there so we're trying to sell.

I think we would have them together until DS reached 8/9 if we HAD to...and we might have to if our house doesn't sell.

I have 3 older brothers and shared a room with the youngest of them (he's 4 years older than me) until I was 4 or 5. My parents decided then to move him in with our older twin brothers because I was a girl and needed my own room, lol.

I think it's okay until the older one starts to hit puberty. If they were the same gender I might let it go a bit longer, but if I had the space I'd give them separate rooms eventually...maybe once the younger hit puberty? I don't know. I guess it depends on how far apart in age they were.

My brother and I shared a room until I was in 6th grade! I hated it and wanted my own room soooo badly. But during the early elementary years, I loved shared a room with him. So we'll probably have our LOs share a room until they're maybe in 3rd/4th grade? Or until either of them decides they really want their own room. Not sure yet.

I don't see any problem with two boys/two girls sharing a room, but a boy/girl might be tougher.

You probably have the best situation with Charlie being older. I think a girl needs her own space sooner. I would say that through elementary it would be ok??? I don't really know. The hardest part would be getting dressed I think.

My niece and nephew still share a room and they’re 13 (nephew) and 10 (niece). I, as well as every member of our family with the exception of their parents apparently, think that they’re way too old to be sharing a space. Both of those kids are either on the brink of puberty or have already gotten there. If they were the same sex then it wouldn’t be an issue but their current situation is far from ideal.

To answer your question, I’d say probably 7 or 8 would be the cutoff for me.

In the house we're trying to get, there's a master bedroom upstairs and a room the exact same size across the hallway. We'll be turning that room into the nursery for our son, Henry, who's about to turn one. The new LO will sleep in our room until it's 6 months, then we'll transition it to the nursery. Since we don't know the gender of the next one, we just plan on having them share regardless because they're so close in age and both need to be upstairs with the parents until they both get a bit older.

Even if it's a boy/girl situation, I don't think I'd be comfortable having either of my LOs on the main floor by themselves until they get much more independent. I guess I'm thinking about the time Henry turns six or seven, when I would have to worry less. Until then, they'll just have to work it out between themselves to share their room. Or we'll have to move downstairs and let the kids have upstairs!
