I believe my 28 mo old got coxsackie at some point before she turned 2 and didn't eat for days (it was in her throat so it hurt to swallow). Dr said hydration is key and not to worry about eating. She def made up for it after she got better!

My 2 year old has a stomach bug and has barely eaten since Saturday afternoon (It's Monday afternoon). I think it's normal and that if your kiddo is eating what you listed, he's doing great!

@erinbaderin: My good friend's son just had an illness + antibiotics, and the fever returned after 48 hours. The doc insisted it was an unlucky combo of strep (antibiotics helped) and a pesky virus. :( Hope your LO is better soon.

FWIW, our doctor said a kiddo could go a week without substantial food as long as she was drinking enough, getting some calories, and didn't seem too lethargic. That seems crazy to me, but apparently it's totally normal. I agree about smoothies. You could even use an avocado instead of banana for some extra fat. Hemp or another high protein milk. Greens and blue/red berries.

We did buy a natural pedialyte drink one time, but I think it was too sweet for LO.

Normal to barely eat for a few days...3-5 days. My youngest used to be the chubbiest thing, and she's had so many illnesses this winter, she's dropped from 92% for weight at her 1 year apt to 60% in weight at her 18 month appt. She eats a ton when she's well, but barely eats when she's sick...and won't drink milk either. We just give lots of water, and whatever weird things she'll eat--ice pops, jello sometimes (our nanny thought of that, and I thought...sure, why not, and LO ate it), soft fruit. But nothing else.

Thanks, everybody, this makes me feel better. @Pollywog: Smoothies is a great idea - he'll eat basically anything in pouch form.

@sapphire: I wondered about this too - he started antibiotics Thursday and with my older son they usually work right away - but we were at the ER Saturday and the Paediatric clinic Sunday and neither of them seemed worried. Sigh.

My ped said eating could be wonky for up to 2 weeks. She said to focus on hydration and to let him eat anything he wanted, with yogurt/probiotics being preferable for the antibiotics. My son straight did not eat and did not want milk. He drank iced water and a little plain rice but we would worry about electrolytes. Oddly at this age when he got really sick is when we found out he WILL drink white Gatorade (glacier cherry I think it's called) on ice and McDonald's fries. So now when he's real sick we offer that and he usually eats a little.

My 14-month old had the stomach flu a couple of weeks ago and ate almost nothing for 5 days except Pedialyte, milk, watered-down gatorade, popsicles, watermelon, yogurt melts, and saltines. NOT HEALTHY I know but he didn't want ANYTHING.

He'll make up for it when he feels better. Fluids are the important part and sounds like he's getting some good calories from nursing. When did the antibiotics start though? If you still have fevers after 48 hours on antibiotics, I would bring him back for a recheck.

I'm sorry he's sick! Have you tried smoothies? That's my go-to way to get fat and calories in LO. I do (almond milk) yogurt, strawberries, banana, and flax seed. I put it in a reusable pouch and he sucks it down. I was told up to a week is fine, just monitor wet and dirty diapers.

I would offer him as much as he's willing to eat of the foods that he will accept, and don't stress if he doesn't eat much. My son had hand foot and mouth recently and between the 103 degree fever and the sores in his throat he ate very little for about 4 days but bounced right back.

Sounds like he's doing fine! Carbs from cheerios, veggies, and protein and fat in the yogurt and breastmilk? That's more balanced than my not sick DD eats some days! Hopefully he feels better soon!

I think the fact he is eating those items is good. My friends daughter was sick (and puking) and didn't eat. She ended up dehydrated and hospitalized because she wasn't eating a thing. As long as he is getting some calories and liquid he should be ok!! Poor baby. ❤

It sucks, but a while! As long as they're drinking they'll be fine, bonus for the added nursing. My toddler had the stomach flu and stopped eating but then stopped drinking anything and that was scary. And he's still eating something so that's great. Mine ate nothing, actually nothing for days.

My 12 month old is pretty much in the same boat right now. She hasn't been eating well for a couple weeks and I'm not sure if it's because of the ears/bronchitis it just a lull in her interest level. As long as he is acting alright and taking the pouches, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Doctor told us it was normal not to eat much. Our oldest is older than yours but was very sick and not eating and he is like 5th percentile for weight They told is it was ok unless he was losing a lot of weight. Like more than 2-3 lbs. Ask the doctor but ours seem more concerned about fluids and dehydration. It seems like appetite starts to return just when you start to really worry. Hope your baby is back to normal soon!

W has been sick - high fevers that we can only get down by layering Tylenol and Advil, since Wednesday night. He's been diagnosed with an ear infection and either bronchitis or pneumonia, and is on antibiotics. The problem is he's not eating. He's basically been living on Cheerios, veggie pouches and yogurt for the past four days. Is this ok? For how long? He's still drinking water and I'm nursing him 2 or 3 times over the night, but I'm pretty sure he's not getting much milk from that.
