N is 15 months old and will only stay happy in his car seat for about 2.5 hours. I can't ride for more then 2 hours normally anyway it works out.

The most we've done is the 2-2.5 hr drive to my ILs. DS would always get antsy at the end.

DS stayed in his car seat for about 5 hours when he was 4 months old. We were driving to Houston. He slept, woke up and looked around and went back to sleep after awhile.

I would just follow her lead and keep going till she lets you know she needs a break. Good luck!

For that short of a drive, we'd go until she got fussy/hungry or needed a change-- so prob 2 hours or so? I forgot how often you need to change them at that age!

@Brassgiraffe: personal expierence, we did a 3.5 hour drive when she was 3 weeks old and she slept the whole way. We planned to stop if needed but since she was sleeping we just powered through.

We stop every 90 minutes just to give her time to stretch, unless she's sleeping then we've gone just over 2 hours.

Our community health nurse said that it should be no longer than two hours at a time just due to how their necks sit in the carseat.

We're going out of town this weekend, and our drive will be about 3.5-4.5 hours each way depending on traffic. DD is 8 weeks old and usually sleeps well in the car, but I would expect her to be awake for part of the drive and be hungry at some point. We'll be driving in the middle of the day.

How long can I let DD stay in the car seat before taking her out? I thought I heard something once about taking them out every 90 minutes or so. How do you handle the length of time your LO spends in the car seat?
