We swaddle weaned when LO was about 4 months old - took 3 or 4 nights for his sleep to get back to normal. He hated just the arms out thing, so we ditched the entire swaddle altogether and that seemed to work better.

Swaddle weaning is a new thing to me, since C never used one. With E we have been using the Halo sleep sack swaddle, and this past week started just wrapping it around his trunk and leaving his arms out. He still feels secure with the swaddle holding tight, but has his arms out to correct himself since he has just started rolling. Don't know when we will ditch the entire swaddle, but I've been loving the results so far.

@merbaby14: well he just mastered rolling back to front today while I was at work so I think it could be milestone/regression related! I think he still has a little of the startle reflex left, but we can't go back now! DH said he was pretty wiped after rolling a bunch so hopefully he sleeps better tonight! Thanks!

I have a very similar situation. My LO is almost 14 weeks and had been fighting his swaddle for weeks. We've been using the Halo Sleep Sack bc there was no blanket that could hold him anymore.

Last week his sleep at night and naps went to crap (he had also been going for similar lengths as yours). I'm pretty sure that it's his 3 month growth spurt or maybe even his 4 month regression coming early.

Since his sleeping was awful anyway, i decided to test not swaddling him and tried one arm out first which he still fought, then went straight to both arms out and he's been sooo much happier sleeping now.

So i guess to answer your question, we had a pretty easy experience moving on from the swaddle with a baby that obviously was over it. I'm wondering if your LO's new sleep problems could also be a growth spurt/regression rather than the result of the swaddle being removed. Just something to think about.

if you haven't already, i would also suggest watching him when you put him down to see if it's the startle reflex which is actually waking him when he's unswaddled.

good luck!

DS is 14 weeks (tomorrow) and was sleeping a 5.5-6 hour stretch, waking to eat, and then going back down for 3-4 hours. He started really fighting the swaddle around 10 weeks, but was still sleeping well in it. Around 12 weeks he started to break out of the swaddle on a regular basis and struggle against it so much he would spit up all over his bed. So we started swaddle weaning last week. We tried with just one arm out/both arms out (but still swaddling his chest) and also tried the Merlin Magic Sleepsuit. His sleep has become HORRIBLE. He sleeps two hours when we first put him down and then we are lucky if he sleeps hour stretches for the rest of the night. It often takes 20-30 minutes to get him back to sleep just to get 30-40 minutes of sleep ourselves.

How long did it take your LO to get used to having their arms out of the swaddle? Does this seem like a normal reaction to swaddle weaning, or are we trying it too soon?
