One day when I was so frustrated with the sudden drop in formula intake from my LO, I opened up the bottle, stuck a regular straw in, and put it to his mouth. He got it instantly.

I went out and bought a straw sippy cup and there was no learning required...he just got it. I have tried the sippy with spouts, and he does not like those...so straw it is!

@cmomma17: I think that is why B likes drinking the traditional way! He is so interested in grabbing the cup and watching me drink when I am holding him and I don't usually use a straw.

@rahlyrah: lemme see if I can find it..... But I recently read an article that said sippy and straw cups are not necessary and aren't really "necessary" as far as development goes--you can just switch to using a regular cup if you want. And that sippy cups in general can hinder development of eating skills (straw cups aren't as bad, but only a couple of kinds were recommended).

I can't find the article I read, but this blog post is similar:

We use a Zoli and a Playtex straw cup. Maybe try sucking some up to the tip of the straw and giving it to him so he doesn't have to suck as hard to get the liquid? Just so he understands the purpose... If that makes sense, haha. FWIW, C loves the straw cups but doesn't understand the sippy cups either.

I liked the Playtex first straw cup in the beginning - it's made so you can squeeze the cup and a little water goes up the straw, so they "get" how to get more.

ETA - LO still doesn't know how to use a sippy - he doesn't understand the whole "tilting the cup" thing!

I'm no help, I just handed ours to LO for the first time tonight and he started chugging!!! I was shocked.

My theory is that since birth he was watched me drink out of camelbak bottles which have a similar spout. And I've let him chew on them a million times.

Keep trying!

We have been trying to get LO to drink from his Zoli for about a week now with no avail. He loves to mimic, so I have tried to show him how it works and he will put the straw in his mouth but won't suck. He likes to drink out of a cup the traditional way (if I hold it up to his mouth for him) so I tried a sippy cup but he won't drink from that either.

Should I just keep offering at every meal? Any tips on helping him learn to suck from it?
