I started the process in June (got married in October) delayed because I had visa's for traveling that I did not want to have to re-apply for. I got everything done by October when I had to travel internationally again!

I started the process four months after the wedding, it took a couple weeks to get doc sec dmv ccs etc all done. We'll be married five years this September and my Korean passport and my green card are still in my maiden name.

I changed my name within the first year we were married. My process was a little trickier because I needed to have a full legal name change due to a mistake my parents made when I was born. I had to put it in the newspaper and go to court to tell my reasoning for the name change. Glad that I did it before LO1 was born because it was a bit of a hassle.

@Ree723: I did. I changed my SS to my married name, my passport (with visa at the time) was in my maiden name. I never had any issues and I was still able to file my taxes in the US as well as travel across the borders.

I changed my name ASAP after I got married because I knew we would be moving abroad within a year or so, so I wanted to have everything taken care of. I did passport first, then driver license then SS card. I changed credit cards and bank accounts after I got my passport back. It took maybe 3 months total because I didn't want to be without proper ID while documents were processing.

Random question: if you change your name with Social Security, can you still hold your passport in a different name? It seems like a lot of people have done that but I was always under the assumption that both had to be in the same name as they are both legal proof of your identity....

If it is possible to change my name with Soc Sec but not change the passport right now, I might do that as I'll be home later this year and could take care of that side of things then. My visa is due for renewal at the end of next year so I could do the passport/visa at that time I think.....

It took ab out 5 months for me to legally change my name and then like a month afterwards to get all my documents changed.

I did not check the name change box for the marriage certificate. A year after I got married, my passport was expiring and since it's a ten year renew, I decided to just go ahead and change my name.

First, I had to go file it in court and pay a filing fee. Then, the court had to publish it in a local newspaper for four weeks to make sure there wasn't any formal objections. So I had to pay another publishing fee. Then, I had to wait until my case made it into the court schedule and that took two months. Once it was on the schedule, I had to go wait through all the hearings until they got to mine. I was in the same court as uncontested divorces and name changes. When it was my turn, I stood in front of a judge and had to explain why I wanted a name change. After he allows it and signs the paper document, I had to pay another document fee to get a notarized copy.

I then used the notarized copy to get a drivers license, social security, credit cards, passport, etc.

Once I started the process it only took me a couple of days. I went to the social security office one day, and the DMV the next day. It was way easier than I thought it would be.

I waited about 3 months after we got married to start the process. I would have done it sooner, but I was busy moving and changing jobs.

I waited six weeks after getting married to change my name and go through the process because we were buying our condo. All of our condo paperwork is in my maiden name. It's been almost 6 years and the one item I haven't changed is my Paypal account because they want to see your marriage license or something ridiculous like that.

Glad I'm not the only one that dragged her feet! I started using my married name pretty quickly but it wasn't until I was pregnant, three years into our marriage, that I actually went to the SS office and got it changed. I had actually misplaced our marriage license and had to get a new one to do it! Then I changed my driver's license and from there I just did things as they came up - so when I went to the bank I let them know, etc.

I moved to a new state and had to register the car in order to get a city parking permit. Since I had to do all that, I wanted it to be in my new name, so I got started with the name change process pretty much right after we got back from our honeymoon.

I think it took me less than two weeks. I made an appointment at the social security office and went in a day or two before Christmas. I believe I received my new social security card in the mail before new years eve or very shortly thereafter. I was surprised by how quickly it came.

Sorry not overseas but with a passport change it took me 3 months (I did a lot of it 4 months before I was about to give birth to our first kid and it was pretty much done while was on maternity leave). I was going slowly though.

I still have one online retirement account and my paypal under my maiden because that required faxing some paper work and I don't have a fax plus laziness in finding a fax.

@looch: I am now, but when we applied for my residence permit I was on a worker visa so rather than change my name during the application process we waited it out. My permit took two years, adding a name change to the process would have only delayed it and I was 37 weeks pregnant and not wanting and delays.

@oliviaoblivia: Just curious, but aren't you there on a residency permit, not a visa? When I lived abroad, I needed a Visa to enter the country. To stay, I needed the local residency permit. It expired yearly and once I had an updated passport and all my name change docs, it was easy to change my residency permit.

@Ree723: how times have changed! Instead of people thinking wives kept their maiden names now the first thought is the couple chose to live together and have children, but not marry.

The process took me less than a month including the time it took to request my birth certificate from another state. ETA: I was changing to the "real" drivers license at the same time.

I actually didn't change my name until 2.5 years after we were married. It was causing more problems than it was worth. I didn't want to change it, but I moved my maiden name to my middle name and dropped my middle. I sign everything first, middle, last. It has helped and I can't imagine now the problems I would encounter having a different name than my children.

So I don't know if this is officially legal, but I changed my name by just adding his last to my last.
I did not hyphenate and I did not move my maiden to my middle. I literally have two last names. Sometimes I use just one, sometimes I use both.
I did not change anything I had before I was married, so all of my banking, credit cards, etc just have my maiden last.

All I did was stand in line at the social security office with my marriage license and got my ss card changed. Then when my license expired a few months later I added both last names to it. I haven't changed anything else, but I have opened accounts with just my married last name since then.

I've been married for almost three years now and I haven't run into any issues at all. I've flown with tickets bought with just my maiden name listed and just my married name listed. Again, no problems. (Although, I am upper-middle class and white - I imagine I might get more scrutiny if that wasn't the case).

I image it would also be different living abroad.

@Chillybear: the passport issue is that visas are tied to the existing passport. The U.S. Embassy can't issue a work visa for a different country. Essentially to change my passport I would be invalidating my visa and then have to apply again for a name change on a new visa. With two kids here I'm not willing to jeopardize my status for a name change.

Four years and I haven't bothered to change it. You all are making me wonder if I could even if I wanted to, as I don't know that I have a copy of our marriage certificate. Hmm . . .
