We have been doing it now for about 3 weeks...it is close to being done, but we keep getting wrenches thrown in our plan...at first, we were just night time training, then we decided to nap train because we are following Weissbluth and are shooting for a certain bedtime. Now he is night waking more often suddenly so we are doing CIO in the middle of the night. Plus he is cutting his third tooth so there's that. I also wonder if we are not doing something right but we haven't checked and he is happier and more well rested than ever....I just think it depends on the situation. I think even sleep trained kids have to be re-trained after vacations, when cutting out a night feed, when being transitioned into their room, etc. So solider on! You're doing great!

@Bao: My understanding is that you let LO cry it out indefinitely before bedtime (basically close the door at night and don't go back in) and up to an hour before naps, as opposed to going in and checking on them/calming them at 5, 10, 15 minutes. DS was getting even more agitated when we went in at those intervals, so we started to let him cry for up to 15 minutes. If he sounds like he's just fighting sleep and it's a very tired cry I'll let him go up to 20, if he's really hysterical I'll go in before 15. He's usually out in about 10 (tonight he went to 15). If he goes over 15 minutes I go in and love on him (and depending on how hysterical I'll nurse him again, but not to sleep) and try again.

@FutureMrsMcK: I think this sounds very successful! Can I ask what extinction is?

And at what point did you feel you were finished?

We've been doing sleep-training (something between CIO and extinction) for over a week now. He now naps in his PnP, going down almost exactly 2 hours after he wakes up from the previous one, and usually for 1-2 hours. Previously, he would only fall asleep nursing in my arms and sleep maybe 20 minutes. I've also stopped nursing him to sleep at night, and putting him down awake in the PnP.

He usually cries for about 10 minutes before he falls asleep at night (and usually around 5 before a nap). He wakes up 1-2 times during the night to nurse.

Would you consider this successful or do you think we still have a lot of work to do? At what point did you consider your LO sleep trained? It's been over a week now, should he be falling asleep on his own without crying yet?
