We started with purées at 5mos. Our son had already demonstrated interest in food and was a voracious eater right off the bat. I had an issue with my milk supply at 6 months, and if he wasn't already eating so many solids then we would had to supplement with formula. He is 8.5 months now and we still have not bothered with BLW. Every once in awhile I let him feed himself -- usually we let him gum a piece of bread -- and he is just so slow, messy and inefficient. Plus I have to worry about him choking. I would go crazy if we did that multiple times per day. I realize that I will eventually have to rip off that band aid but I am procrastinating it right now since he doesn't seem to mind being fed.

we did a mix of BLW and purees starting around 5 months. he was slightly more into the purees, but when i say that, i mean i would get maybe a teaspoon into his mouth during the "meal". and BLW was really for fun at that point. i kept offering the purees and finger food, and over the course of a couple of months i felt like he actually started BLW.

@ScarletBegonia: Xander didn't get into finger foods until closer to 14 months!!!! Some kids just take longer than others apparently. I was really worried about it too, but I didn't know how to get him interested. I'd keep offering and daycare would offer, but he just wanted nothing to do with them. At some point (maybe around 11/12 months), he started eating SOME finger foods, like crackers, toast, etc. But only carbs. No meats, veggies, fruit, etc. It might have been a texture issue, though I'm not really sure. I think for us, it helped that he was in daycare, because he eventually just started eating the finger foods that were provided for all the kids there (our daycare provides food), so I think seeing other kids do it helped. Once he started eating more finger foods at daycare, we started introducing more of them at home as well. I would try to offer him similar things to what I knew he liked at daycare and that seemed to work, although he's still a LOT more picky at home than he is at school!

@ScarletBegonia: My son had no interest in self feeding for quite a while too. Not until at least 10+ months. I started off giving him small things like puffs before meals, then I upped the chunkiness of his purees and started offering him stuff that we were eating. Now at 12m he can eat almost everything that we do. But it was definitely slow going at the beginning.

@Adira: sorry to jack this thread, and I will reply to @Mae: as well, but could you tell me how the transition from purees to finger foods went? My son is 8.5 months now and just on purees (some super chunky, but still spoon fed) and is not interested in finger foods AT ALL. I offer puffs, veggie sticks both raw and steamed, toast fingers with avocado (which he loves off a spoon)...he doesn't want them and they all end up on the floor, but he'll eat an incredible volume of purees. Any tips/advice?

@Mae: we started at about 5.5 months, and it was slow going for about 3/4 weeks...then he started to understand how to eat properly, gum/chew and swallow, and started liking it a lot more. For a long time he needed apricot or prune in everything to sweeten it, but now he'll eat whatever, sweet or savoury.

@Mae: I posted something similar once because I was extremely frustrated my child didn't seem interested in food at all. We did BLW starting at 6 months, and I don't think he really "got" into food until closer to 8 months. Just now, at 11 months, he seems to get actively excited about food.

And the past 2 weeks, he flat out refuses to eat dinner. I'm lucky if he'll take anything. He sleeps through the night though, so I know he's fine, but it's hard when you see other babies shoveling it down!

We didn't do BLW - we did purees, but Xander was totally NOT into it in the beginning. He would even cry whenever we offered (after that very first taste at 6 months). He didn't start really getting into it until 8 months, and even then he only got solids once a day and we could skip days and he didn't care.

It took maybe a month or two? We gave him some solids at 4m for constipation (prunes + breastmilk) but we didn't really do much until 6m. At that point we had been basically force feeding him medicine for pneumonia and he refused to eat anything from me. But by 9m we did manage to ramp it up to 3 meals a day. It's easier when they go to daycare - daycare feeds them breakfast and lunch and all I had to worry about was dinner.

Ack! I got submit too soon.

We started solids with Chloe when she was 4 months. She was FF, and instantly took to the rice cereal. I blogged about our experience, which would give a more accurate account of our journey with food -- I seriously can't recall what we did what and when right now.

I just remember she was like OMGFOODZ and shoveled it in her face. Once my mom gave her table food (is that the right term? It sounds like something you'd use to describe for dogs...) Chloe wouldn't touch grocery store purées.

I fed her 3x a day; we did a bfast, lunch and dinner.

Well, you know our story. LO really wouldn't eat at all until almost 7 months. Then she would kind of eat 1 "meal" a day (of purees) but she was never super into it. I moved her to 2 meals and then 3 meals at the "suggested" times, but every single meal was a stressful event where she mostly pushed everything out of her mouth. I distinctly remember that the week of her 1st birthday, she would only eat tangerine segments...all week.

Then at 12.5 months, it was like a switch flipped and she became voracious and super into eating. I watched her devour an entire salmon filet in one sitting once. It was crazy. Now she's a normal toddler eater--she eats some big meals and some smaller meals, but she's a very good eater overall. Tonight for dinner she had butternut squash pasta, meatballs, and broccoli--no problems!

@Mae: our situation was a little different cause LO wasn't bottle fed, but we had a super slow start to solids. She would get allergic reactions (just on the skin) to things like sweet potatoe and carrots. At 12 months she was having maybe one meal but some days would only nibble on an apple or banana.

I was worried, but she was nursing a lot so she obviously wasn't starving. I kinda took it slow and relaxed and just kept offering and we tried to eat more as a family. Probably around 18 months she started being more interested in our plates and would start eating off those. Now at 2 she eats basically everything and A LOT. So for us, slow and no pressure really worked. Eventually she got into it. It also helped that she was older and we were able to talk to her more about food and she was able to communicate her likes and dislikes.

Best of luck to you!!

@twodoghouse: yea I keep getting tempted to buy jars but I'm trying to keep the faith that blw will be worth it. I def do NOT find it easier like ppl say at this point though. But I guess that's bc I don't eat healthy enough or allergy free enough (since she is mspi) to give her my food.

@Mae: I feel like our peds office is super pushy about the food stuff. They said we could start at 4 months! Reading other things it seems like that's really early. Also it takes about an hour to do the whole process so 3x seems impossible. Especially when their awake time between naps is only 1.5-2 hrs on a good day! I am preparing all their food. Maybe if we went to jarred stuff it would be quicker? But right now Blake's digestive system can barely handle solids every other day so no way will he be able to be doing 3x a day anytime soon.

@twodoghouse: see my ped has given us basically no advice. She asked if we'd tried solids and I said yes and told her we were doing BLW and she seemed to like playing with food okay but wasn't swallowing a ton yet and she said "okay sounds like we might not have to do feeding therapy after all!" (she thought we may have to considering her prior refusal). So I was like okayyyy? guess we're on the right track. But no goals or anything. Maybe she has lower standards for her because her putting ANY food in her mouth willingly is an improvement? lol also omg 3 times. Like I just have no clue when we'd have time for that. I already feel like fitting food in once/day is so hard. I may actually start another thread about that bc I don't understand the logistics..

We also have feeding issues so maybe this isn't helpful, but we started with purées at 5 months. For at least the first month LO would make the worst faces when trying things. At 7 months he is really enjoying feeding himself pears, carrots, banana, etc with a mesh feeder. As far as purées go he isn't swallowing much, but no longer refuses the spoon. He is getting more interested basically, but it's baby steps. And like you after having feeding issues I was hoping somehow solids would just be easy peasy to make up for everything else being hard!

Blake is really excited about sitting in his high chair and playing with a spoon, but makes the yuck face and doesn't eat much, either. I keep reminding myself that this is still early and he has tons of time to adjust to it. Our ped freaked us out because she said we should be working towards solids 3x a day at 9 months. At the pace we are going there is no way that will happen.

We didn't BLW till 9 months but yeah it was very similar to your LO! He didn't seem interested really but when he saw us eating it he would try it but mostly just played. His favorite thing was crackers though. He would half a cracker before discarding it.

He is 2.5 now and he is pretty good with food but yeah when he's not hungry he still plays with it... that's when we know he's done... very rarely he will do his "all done" sign language though.

So my LO is only 6.5 mo. We are doing BLW and started about a month ago. So far she is really not into food. Sometimes she thinks it is sort of fun to smash it around, but usually she gets distracted really fast and is over it. She does try to put everything in her mouth but she always makes a yuck face when her tongue touches food. Some things are better than others. She does better with bananas and apples and pears than she does with veggies or oatmeal. But even those she sort of shoves in her mouth and still makes a face but keeps tasting stuff over and over again. She doesn't usually swallow much.

I try with her once/day but not every day. Maybe 4-5 days/week. I only give her one thing at a time and if she seems totally uninterested we just stop. Or if she plays with it for just 2-3 min and then is over it we stop. I really just don't want to force it but I worry I should be trying more often since she isn't into it...?

But from what I've read... this is pretty normal right? Some babies just aren't into solids until they are a little older..?

I think i'm hyper sensitive about this because we've already had so many food refusal issues with bottles and that is the whole reason we are doing BLW (trying to let her run the show and make food fun rather than something we're forcing on her). Also because I see a lot of other 6 mo babies who seem to love food.

But reassure me (or ya know, don't). When did your baby start getting excited about eating food?
