@Mamaof2: That's interesting, my son has the same reaction to birthday parties, especially this year that they began to be drop off.

@bloved: That is my husband's solution as well. I will be honest, sometimes I just want to stay home as well. After a full week of work and commuting, the last thing I want to do is go to places and be around a ton of people. I have that 5 days a week already. Part of the problem is that my husband won't come along unless it's something he wants to do as well and my son is old enough to notice.

My DS dealt with this his whole life - It got so extreme he started to see a LCSW at 5.5.

At 7 he is finally able to go and enjoy birthday parties - such a simple concept to most but it was horrifying for my DS.

@looch: yes, the LCSW told us we could not avoid activities. She said he had to go for at least 15 mins - after that we cold leave

Following along because my son (2.5 years old) definitely has this, along with a strong aversion to change (daycare teacher brought up anxiety and ocd at his conference last week :/). Whenever I ask who he plays with at daycare he says "screwdriver" (he is obsessed with tools) and when we've gone to parties or other toddler activities he clings to me and is loathe to participate. I would love some strategies to help him feel more confident and social!

Eta- and my husband's solution is just to avoid doing stuff since he does not enjoy it, but that seems the opposite of how to fix this to me. However it is doubly exhausting when ds is miserable and dh is stressed and not wanting to push him to do it in the first place!

Bumping this way old thread....but I've noticed that my son has some social anxiety, particularly on weekends and when there are activities involved.

Yesterday, for example, we had planned to take him to Monster Jam, which he's already been to so he knew what to expect. It began as he was getting dressed, where he declared he didn't want to go to the arena, just the pit party and then return home.

In the end, he stayed at the event the entire time, only returning home after 4. He had a great time, but man, he really would have preferred to stay home. Which on some days is fine, but the less we do, the less he wants to do.

Anyone have any strategies to make it easier? Is the solution that we just pack our weekends with stuff to do?

It was on and off for my first daughter... So, lots of short phases over the first few years. My second though loves people and is very social, except she's really grumpy before and after naptimes usually. ha!

DS is almost 15 mo and it hasn't hit yet, or at least not that i have noticed. DD lasted for a few months. Not too long. But she went through another phase between 3-4 yr which was far worse.

She's 16 months and its still here. When she was a baby she would cry if someone just looked at her. Now she gives big smiles and loves attention .... but if they try to pick her up, even after playing with her for hours, she'll scream if its not mommy, daddy, or a grandparent.
