Literally the day after their first joint party (turning ages 2 and 4) my oldest told me she wanted her own party going forward. When we were little kids, my parents threw one big party for the kids/family, it was usually outside with only cake served. We did this until we were about 9/7 which was the end of elementary school and when we started drifting away from playing with the same neighborhood kids. </p> <p>So around 9/7 we started having separate bday parties which was always a sleepover, we could invite 2-3 other kids, pick a movie, order pizza and make sundaes. It was often back to back weekends because that typically when our birthdays hit on the calendar. </p> <p>When we split off into separate sleepover birthdays, we still would have a combined family dinner for the grandparents, uncles, family friends etc (we were the only kids on both sides and first kids of my parents friends, so we had a large 'extended family'). My parents rented out the local country club, so we had the pool and sports courts to ourselves for a 4 hours time period, so we invited about 200 kids between us (and their parents) and had a blast.</p> <p>SO...you could combine parties for a long while! Once we were old enough to have our own friends we would have our own small friend party and then a combined family party in between the bdays (but we had a lot of aunts and uncles within an hour or so away). We did a joint 5/2 party that was paw patrol themed. The next year we did just a party for 6th bday, because we were past the playplace type bday and did a jewelry making party. They asked for separate parties this year (6 &amp; 4). They had very different and specific hopes for what they each wanted. Plus with the older in kinder this year, she had friends she wanted to invite who wouldn’t know her sister at all, and I didn’t want their parents to feel obligated to buy two gifts nor for DD2 to feel like she had fewer guests of her own, which she would have both had and noticed. All that said, I may encourage them to have joint ones again down the road. They just turned 8 &amp; 9. </p> <p>On the other hand my best friend growing up had a joint party with her younger by 3 years sister every year. I plan to do combo parties as long as they'll let me! How long do you think that will be? How'd it work out with your kids? Any suggestions for unisex themes? (gender stereotypes aside, I just have lot of conservative friends &amp; family) </p>
