I nursed TG to 17 months, when she self weaned at the beginning of my second trimester with Wonder Baby. This time I am at almost 12 months and intend to let her self wean. If she doesn't by 24 months I'll re-evaluate.

My goal was 1 year and open to letting him self-wean. LO1 is 19 months and still hasn't totally weaned, so with LO2 due this month I might be tandem nursing for a while.

@lemondrop: Breastfeeding is a sensitive topic for me too because I got a lot of criticism. DD has eczema and I had to do an elimination diet to pinpoint what triggered it, and I just kept getting the "if you stop then eczema will go away". There was also a lot of other bumps in the road and I truly think she will wean when she is ready. I just wish people would either support or keep their unsupportive comments to themselves. =\

@sandy: Your weaning experience sounds so nice and what I hope happens for us too! Thanks for sharing your story. =)

I planned on a year. Child is 20 months now. I didn't feel ready to stop at a year but child apparently doesn't ever feel like stopping. ETA: I don't really mind, she just started nursing more when her teeth her and that I did mind nursing all the time. But when it's just a couple times, it's no problem. I do hope to stop by the time she's 2.

@littleveesmommy: @lemondrop: i definitely went through this when LO turned one. Like you guys, I told anyone who asked that I hoped to nurse LO for at least 12 months...and then they just expected me to stop.

I worried about weaning but just kind of followed her. We nursed 3 times at day at 12 months and then 2 times a day shortly after her first birthday (morning and bedtime). Then at 14 months I noticed she hardly nursed...sometimes only for a minute and two and sometimes even shorter than that. I kept offering and finally I realized she wasn't interested so I just stopped and she is totally fine and doesn't miss it :). It's been two days since we stopped breastfeeding and the weirdest part for me is not wearing nursing bras anymore...she is 14.5 months.

@honeybear: @littleveesmommy: exactly, they don't turn into pumpkins the minute they turn 1! I understand that most people who react this way weren't the biggest supporters of nursing in the first place, but it is a sensitive thing for me.

Nursing is something I have worked very hard at, it did not come easy, so stopping isn't as simple as flipping a switch. We are only nursing 3-4 brief times a day, so we are heading in the direction of finishing.

Yes, he is getting big, but in so many ways he is still very much a baby. I'm thinking to gradually wean by 18 months. We are trying for another baby, so the decision may be out of our hands sooner rather than later.

@lemondrop: I'm in the same place! We are hitting a year on Saturday and people ask thinking that the day DD hits one, we magically stop and all is good. I'm also not ready to stop (though we weaned daytime since pumping at work wasn't going well) and plan to let DD self wean.

@sarac: Your LO is still young, so that's fine. Even though the boy was 4 years old, the mom had no plans of weaning him! I think 4 is a bit old for nursing.

DD is turning a year on Saturday (!!!) and we are nursing morning, bedtime and the few times she wakes at night, which is usually if she's teething, sick, or nightmares. We just weaned daytime nursing last weekend but I'm going to let her dictate the rest. She signs for milk when she wants and we do well with the current routine, so I will continue. It is a bit tough since DD's eczema flairs up with eggs or corn so I have to watch my diet.

@Alivoo01: Unnecessary attachment . . . yikes. My 16 month old is perfectly attached to me, and our nursing relationship is a huge part of that. I don't consider it unnecessary for a second.

I visited a friend the other day who put things in perspective. My lo will be 8 months in February. She said, "You have pumped for more time than you have left. Think about that!" I only have 4 more months of pumping left!! Wooooohoooo!!

@honeybear: this!!!! I have known many moms who did extended breastfeeding- up to 3-4 years. As long as the kids are respectful about it it's generally not an issue. Little girl I knew was 3.5 when weaned and she knew nursing was for naps and nighttime only. She did have comfort nursing when she was hurt and that's really the only time she asked for it.

Cobi is 11 months and already starting to stick his hands down my shirt when he wants it so I need to find out how to curb that. We've been trying to teach him the sign for milk but he won't sign it yet.

My goal was 1 year then see how we're doing. He loves it and I don't mind it so we'll probably shoot for 18 months then assess again where we are and i'm willing to go up to 2 years if necessary, but around 2 years is likely my cutoff point. We'll see how it goes :) I just like the idea of setting a goal(like 1 year) and seeing if its still mutually desired :) rather than "this is when we HAVE to stop!"

We're closing in on 2.5 years, and we're almost done. I didn't do much to end it--although I'm ready--LO has just been dropping nursing sessions gradually. My goal was 1 year.

@Sugar.Biscuit: @oliviaoblivia: In my experience (admittedly, sample size = 1), it could be hard to wean promptly at 18 months or 2 years. I never thought I'd still be nursing a 2yo, but the reality is we do it once a day (if that), and I haven't nursed LO in public/anywhere inconvenient in well over a year. Every child is an individual, of course, but I think there is kind of a natural end-date to nursing and it's probably somewhere shortly after 2 years. As to the nursing manners issues, I taught my LO when it was okay to ask and when it wasn't, and I think it's probably really important to do that if it looks like you'll go beyond a year. One and two year-olds definitely understand boundaries like that.

@lemondrop: Those types of comments seriously rankle me. ;) I usually just smiled politely and changed the subject.

I was only planning to nurse for 6 months and stopping/slowing down when I went back to work at that time. He started getting some formula when I went back but we still held on to 2 nursing sessions a day that we are still doing at 13 months. I keep saying that I'm going to stop soon, but I continue to nurse him every morning and night.
