My daughter was born at 3:37pm and we left around 11am the next day. I would have been perfectly happy to leave sooner, though. I hate hospitals! 11am was the earliest they would let me check out.

I went in at 11 am on Sunday, had him at 6 am on Monday and didn't get to leave until 6 pm on Wednesday. I lost a lot of blood during the birth and ended up with a transfusion Tuesday. So they had to get that all straightened out before I left. If I didn't have my OB I probably would have been there until Thursday. I was soooooo glad to be home.

@MegWag: that's awesome then!! I had an LC home visit with my first and went to a LC-run support group nearby on day 6 with my second... both very helpful.

@NYCaliMama: They'll actually send midwives and LC to our home to check on us after we go home, so we still get plenty of help with breastfeeding- which is a relief! One of my friends said that the home visits are a real godsend.

Our hospital requires 24 hours for v-birth and 48 for c-section min. Even with a v-birth I couldn't imagine going home 8 hours later. That could just be the same day!

24 hours. My friend had the option of leaving after 8 hours and that is what she planned but after giving birth you're SO exhausted and overwhelmed that staying in the hospital was just better for her.

48 hours both times. It was helpful for me to stay and get bf'ing help from the nurses and LC's during that time... Also went to a bf'ing class and infant care class with the babies. Not to mention the general help overall and being observed by the OB and ped during that time was nice.

In NZ many women will leave a hospital within a day (if their pregnancy was considered high-risk enough for hospitalisation) and move to a maternity unit (where low-risk mothers can also choose to birth - think this is probably like a birthing centre?)until they feel ready to go home. There's no particular guideline on when mothers should go home but midwives are generally happier if the mother has been able to *ahem* poop before going home. In NZ, women must choose a Lead Maternity Carer (LMC) and the majority of women go with a midwife supported birth.

I was a patient for 5 days. I was in labor for 26 hours, ended up having a c-section, and I got an infection. The infection caused me to be there a bit longer and on strong IV antibiotics the whole time. My blood count was so low that they actually wanted to do a blood transfusion. I put my foot down and finally said that I had enough of being there and being hooked up to machines, so refused it. I just wanted to be back home already.

Where I was it was a standard 4 nights for vaginal birth, 5 for c-section. My DH could stay the entire time. I was so glad to have the midwifes and nurses around fro reassurance on Day 3 when my milk came in and I got hit with the baby blues.

Where I was 2 days is standard for vaginal and 4 for c-section. I delivered at 6 am and left around 1pm the following day. I had a episiotomy to get my 10+ pound boy out, but got lucky and was able to move well within an hour or two of birth. That night I could not sleep at all and some moron had a 2 year old running up and down the hallway at 2am. I wanted to leave early and they let me. I had dh and my parents at home to help me.

The hospital I delivered in, you have to stay at least 24 hrs, or maybe its 36.... how it ended up being though, I stayed 2 nights, and left on the 3rd day in the morning. I had already paid for the second night regardless of if I stayed or not since it was past "check out" time. I didn't want to go home! It was so nice having help and being waited on!

The hospital where I deliver has an average stay for 24 hours for vaginal delivery, and 72 hours for a c-section, but that all depends on the status of mom and baby.

The birthing center we are thinking of delivering also lets patients leave within 6-8 hours. Depending on when you deliver, you can stay overnight if it's super early in the morning.

If we go to the hospital it's 2 days.

I had to stay for 7 days, the required amount here in Japan for c-sections. I think for vaginal birth they keep you here for 5 days. After the 4th day, I really just wanted to go home.

I stayed 48 hours.

@MegWag: that sucks! I don't know how I would have done it without my husband there. I had a bad tear so I barely left my bed, only to pee. He did everything for me and the baby. If I wanted her he would hand her to me, and I never even changes a diaper until I got home!

I was thankful for that time in the hospital though. It was nice always having a nurse there if we had questions.

I gave birth at a midwifery and she was going to let me leave after like 4 hours but my mom came into town just for the night so she let us stay the night there so my mom wouldn't have to get a motel room or anything.

See, I think I'm so used to the American system that it just sound way rushed to me....
Even if I gave birth in the hospital setting it wouldn't be 24 hours. I think the British system just pushes you out quicker since it's not paid for by insurance companies...
But if I did go in the hospital and have to stay overnight, my husband wouldn't be allowed to stay! I'd much rather go home than have to stay without him. That freaks me out.

I'm planning to give birth in a Birthing Centre. If all goes to plan, I'll be expected to leave the hospital and go home within 8 hours.
On the one hand, that seems super-quick to me. On the other, I'd rather be home in my own space.
How long did you stay after giving birth?
