The combination has been shown to be more detrimental than a normal level of folate in conjunction with a b12 deficiency. So I'm not worried about a lack of folate harming a fetus (since my levels are elivated to begin with), I do worry about long term cognitive damage from any extra folate. Folic acid is the big deal in the early days of pregnancy, so that seems to be why the recommendation is to start before you could get pregnant. I took them for about 4-5 months pre-pregnancy, as it turned out. A prenatal has been my standard multivitamin since I was 18. My dr recommended it as soon as you're of child bearing age. A little extra iron and folic acid never hurt anybody.
