We used to think we were super fertile because we managed to get pregnant while on BC years ago, even though I ended up having a miscarriage. Now after a long time of being off and not having an accident, I'm not so sure, so I figured it could be at least 6 months. DH thought we'd get a BFP on the first try but here we are in cycle #3 of TTC...

I started getting irregular cycles when I was in college, and my mom had fertility issues (I'm a clomid baby), so I thought it make take a little longer than I hoped. Even so, I didn't imagine having 2 years of unprotected sex without it resulting in pregnancy. :(

I thought it would happen really quickly for us, since I've never been on BC and DH and I are both fairly young. I still can't believe it's been over a year and 14 cycles since we started trying...

We decided to try because my doctor didn't think I was ovulating, she said give it 6 months and she'd refer me to a specialist. We got pregnant that same week. We thought it would be way more than 6 months, so it was pretty shocking, I guess I was ovulating!!

Now we're onto cycle #2 after we miscarried, and I am convinced it'll be 6-9 months before we get pregnant.

I thought 6 months to a year because i was 34 (now 35) and i had low AMH results. my husband and i planned to start trying in January but we tempted fate one day on our honeymoon in Thailand my fertile window and that was all it took this time. I am due September 2nd. It could have helped that i was off the pill since June of last year, changed my diet, was on prenatals for many months and had an HSG the month prior but who knows. I hope we are even close to as lucky when we try for number two.

I seriously thought it would happen right away (we both come from long lines of super fertile women). It took 13 months. Although, to be fair, it happened the first month it could (it just took us a really long time to discover that I have endometriosis and had two blocked tubes. Oiy.)

@twodoghouse Somehow it's comforting I'm not the only one who was so hopeful it would happen right away.. I thought just being off the pill I would magically get pregnant.. nope. Then we timed BD perfectly around positive OPKs... TWICE... nope... I was SHOCKED! :) Trying to keep my wits about me that some people get really lucky and it happens right away, but not for everyone.

I can't believe I'm admitting to how naive I was.... but I totally thought it would happen immediately. In December of 2010 we had an "oops!" and I was 100% convinced I was pregnant. My mom used to talk all the time about how fertile she was (two accidental babies 13 months apart before she was 20!). In fact, the only sex talk I got from my parents was "don't ever sex because you will definitely get pregnant even if you don't think it's possible." So it was just drilled into my head how incredibly fertile I was probably was. Um... not so much now that we're going on 18 months TTC!

I go back and forth between believing that we could get pregnant in the first few months of TTC, and then convincing myself that we will have a hard time and need help. I think in the end when we do start trying, I will be really surprised if it "works" quickly.

@skipra: Ugh I have no idea. I had it 2 years ago and as recently as this past December, my gyn said I was fine with no stenosis. I went in for an unrelated issue to a new doctor last week and he said I do have it after all, and on Wednesday (like, 5 days ago) had a procedure to re-open it. He said it's likely because I went off birth control between December and now, which apparently softens your cervix (ie being on the pill makes your cervix soft). So going off hardens it. I don't know if the stenosis magically appeared because scar tissue re-hardened or what, but something changed since December. Also my LEEP was VERY superficial so my doc said back then any chance of side effects was minimal.. hoping for a bfp now that this is over.

Sorry to threadjack! :)

@JoJoGirl: So far the only side effect I've noticed was decreased CM immediately after for a few cycles (I had mine one year ago). I don't know if it was coincidence but I had the first noticeable ovulation CM in December after drinking a ton of green tea to ward off a cold.
There has been some concern in pregnancy for pre-term labor due to cervical incompetence but so far so good. Also I'm nervous that I will have trouble dilating but no one has mentioned this risk to me, except Dr. Google.
What are you planning to do about the stenosis? Is it caused by scar tissue?

I honestly didn't expect it to happen without assistance because my doctor told me I was probably not ovulating due to PCOS and chances were not good. I went off the pill in Jan or Feb and really had no expectations especially with irregular/super light cycles, a LEEP, and a ton of stress. In November I just had a feeling, which turned out to be a miscarriage. Then I got my bfp on New Year's Day. So I expected never and it took just under a year.

I went into it expecting a long journey. No particular reason, just thought about how many couples we know that have bumps in the road and wanted to be "realistic" about our journey.

I went off BC in OCT, pretty much NTNT through DEC and got pregnant our third active cycle in FEB.

We were lucky. And third time was def a charm for us.

It took us 4 cycles to conceive. I went off birth control, but we avoided for 3 months to see how my cycles were. After that, it took four months. I hoped that it would only take a month since everyone around us did. We had two months where we just missed the mark. For us, Thanksgiving weekend seemed to be the right time.

Wow, this thread gives me a lot of hope, thank you ladies! I've always assumed it would take a long time. I was on BC for 12+ years, my periods are super irregular (3 - 4 per year) and I'm 32.

I assumed it would take a year. I don't know why - I just felt that way. It took 22 cycles, and 2 cps. That last cycle we conceived on iui with meds + hcg trigger in a clinical study. My ob gyn practice never felt the need to refer me to a reproductive endocrinologist bc I had 2 pregnancies along the way. They wanted me to do 1 more round of clomid in their care before referring me. I found the study through word of mouth and enrolled myself.

We both thought it would happen pretty quickly, and it did...only 2 cycles of trying. But I've always had really regular periods on and off BC, so that's probably a large factor in our early success.

I'm older and was on BCP from 1997-2007, so I figured it would take us a year and that we'd need interventions. So, I charted and did a pregnancy prep that included acupuncture. We were successful on our first try.

I honestly thought I'd get pregnant immediately about going off BCP, but I figured it might 3-6 months. I'm in month 6 now so... *crosses fingers*
