I like the Carter's early walkers shoes they are not the best quality but I can usually get them for $17 on sale. We still have a couple pairs of soft soles. My girls all walked early with tiny feet in the fall. During the winter I still used them but if she'd be walking outside I'd use see Kai Run or something similar, if we were going on a playdate, to the library, museum etc where we'd be inside and I'd carry her in anyway I'd still use the soft. He started walking at 10 months but we still sent him to daycare in just socks. At home he would wear normal shoes if we went somewhere. He's almost 2 and had a pair of awesome Stride Rites when he was first walking. Some of the 'new walker' type or toddler shoes don't go beyond size 6 so I was forced to get something different. Flat and flimsy are best for kids at any age as it lets the foot develop naturally and helps them gain feedback from the ground for balance and foot strength.
