No longer than five minutes. But she's 14 months old so I can usually tell if she's fussing because she's just tired and needs to fuss it out and it should only take five minutes for her to lay down and relax, or if she pooped and that's why she's fussing.

It depends. Sometimes I let him cry for 15 minutes or so but will check every 5 mins to see if he's okay. He eventually falls asleep. But I find that when I put him down just at the right time he hardly fusses. It's when he's overtired when he fusses the most before falling asleep. However, most times he'll cry for a couple of seconds and then quiet down and fall asleep within the minute. Sometimes he'll "complain" or more like whine talk for a minute before he falls asleep. These little ones are so funny like that! My oldest was the same exact way!!!!

Wonder Baby is almost 8 months old, but for me it's not about the time as the level of her fussing. I know her well enough now to know if she's just rolling around and grumping or if it's switched to her actually being upset. So sometimes I can hear her for an hour, but she's just complaining, not crying. And sometimes she gets very upset very quickly and I go get her. But we aren't pretending to CIO, just helping her learn to settle without constant help.

I usually give him a few minutes and if he doesn't calm down I'll go get him. I can tell when he's really working himself up to a full on cry or if he's just being a little fussy and will fall right back asleep.

@winniebee: I hear you! I couldn't let my LO cry hard for a whole hour but we've never had that happen. Like @cvbee said, if you time it right and your LO is an independent sleeper then the fussing/crying should be minimal.

I should clarify that if we had any hard crying then I would intervene at every 10 minutes or so. For naps, the longest I have attempted a nap is 45 minutes before getting him up and it was always if I was attempting a nap after 4pm. I would then take him for a drive to get him to fall asleep.

For bedtime, hard crying occurred very rarely but again, I'd intervene once just to snuggle him after 10 minutes and then let him work things out. The longest he has ever cried at bedtime is 25 minutes.

Also keep in mind that babies usually cry harder after a check but they're protesting...not calling out for help!

Hang in there mama!

I think it really depends on the age. Now that LO is 5 months old, if I have met all his needs and I know it's a good time for him to sleep I don't mind letting him fuss.

HSHC also says perfect timing produces no crying, so if there is a lot of crying, I consider it an error on my part and will help him out, sometimes immediately.

I will let him quietly fuss for about 15 minutes for a nap. He does not cry his head off though. If he were crying his little head off I would maybe only let him do that for less than 5 minutes.

Well, he typically goes from fussing to inconsolable crying in like 30 seconds, so not long at all. I let him fuss as long as he's just fussing, but we aren't doing any sort of CIO at this point, so I rescue him pretty quickly. He become absolutely hysterical if we don't and then takes a good 30 minutes to calm down, so we dont mess with it. That mixed with reflux that has hit a rough patch again, and sleep training at this point seems well off in the future.

@Sammyfab: Very true. I read HSHC and could not let him cry like crazy for an hour though! I just try to gauge how upset he is and go from there.

Until he falls asleep :). I am very diligent about watching his wake time and putting him down when I know he should be ready to sleep so we get little fussing/crying. When it happens though, I let him work it out for as long as he needs to. The general rule for nap training though is to leave for 30 minutes (Ferber) or a full hour (HSHHC). 5-10 minutes is not a lot of time for them to figure out how to fall asleep on their own.

We did about the same thing as you. There is a distinct difference between her upset/needs mama cry and her cranky fuss. I will usually give her 10 minutes or so of fussing before I intervene. We techincally didn't sleep train or CIO either, but just doing this and understanding the difference between her cries has led to SOOOO much better sleep. STTN for 3 nights in a row with 2 good solid day naps!!!!

My son is 4.5 months and for the last months naps have been quite poor. So, though I'm technically not nap training, when I put him down, I look at the clock and say, I'll let him cry or fuss for X amount of time. Today, I put him down at 8:49 a.m. for his first nap and he started fussing. He was fed, clean and it was nap time, so I said, I'll wait til 9 to soothe him. He cried off and on for 5 minutes, then fussed off and on for 5 minutes and it's been silence since 9:02. I haven't checked, but assume he is sleeping : ) I'm hoping he's going to start to get the hang of it!

How long will you let your LO cry or fuss at nap or bedtime?
