Thanks all! We've actually switched to EP-ing already so now he is sucking down bottles in 10 minutes or less!

Never stopped him, so as long as he needed. In the beginning it was as least 30 minutes a side! He'll get more efficient pretty quickly, though. And yes, comfort nursing is totally a thing. Sometimes if J nursed for a really long time I'd offer a pacifier and see if he'd be okay with that instead.

About 30-40 min to begin with. Now that we both know what we're doing at 14wks, most sessions take 5-10 min. Your little one will eventually eat more quickly too :)

I felt like I was nursing round the clock in the newborn days! I agree with others that say don't watch the clock... I'd just nurse until they fell asleep, and when they fell asleep I'd tickle their feet or make swirls on their cheeks to wake them back up and they'd just keep nursing. If I had to set a time limit I'd say I nursed 45-60 min each time. It wasn't until they got older and more efficient did they drop to 15-20 minutes per session.

Because I was so engorged I did 15 or 20 minutes each side otherwise I was in too much pain. LO had no chance of emptying my breast.

mine never stopped nursing ever, just switched sides for comfort. Had a great supply! She still nurses for 2 hours a day or so at 18 months.

Personally for me, it was never too long. We had latch issues so I was not about to switch sides and risk not being able to latch again!! He nursed on one side for 45 mins when we were in the hospital and the nurses said "Mommys aren't pacifiers" and tried to talk me into limiting him to 15 mins per side. I didn't listen and then I had a huge supply of milk on that side when my milk came in. So I'm in the camp of let your baby decide how long to nurse!

But every situation is different.

I just let my babies nurse until they either fell asleep or popped off. I would always offer the other side when they were done, too, but most of the time my babies stuck with one side. I'd feed with the other side the next feeding.

I think I started with 20 minutes each side. Before long though LO started refusing the second side and would only feed one side per session.

Congrats!!

DD is one month; she can PPP off in 10-15 or she can nurse on one side for 30! I don't know of some of that is just comfort nursing though.

@HappyBaker: With my first, I actually ended up nursing only one side at a time each feeding because I needed a break from it, and would nurse about 30 min on one side in the beginning. With my 2nd, she would stay on all day if I let her, so I had to start offering the paci... and having someone else hold her (if possible), so she would stop trying to nurse all the time. haha Some babies just really like to comfort nurse. But, if your milk hasn't come in yet, then your baby might just be getting hungry and trying to get the milk to satisfy the stomach.

Any amount of time is normal. Watch the baby not the clock  The longer baby stays at the breast the better your supply. Settle in on the couch and catch up on TV shows!

I don't think I ever pulled him off. We just stopped when he fell asleep or stopped sucking. It took 5 days for my milk to come in so we were trying to get as much stimulation as possible.

Most IBCLCs won't give time limits. They just say keep feeding until he pops off or falls asleep. My LO could go up to 45mins/side at the beginning, it was nuts.

L is only 3 days old and my milk isn't in yet, so we're currently doing 20-30 minutes a side at each feeding. Is that too much? I'm hoping once there's milk it will be faster?! My first had so many feeding issues I don't know what to expect!
