In the beginning it was as least 30 minutes a side! He'll get more efficient pretty quickly, though. And yes, comfort nursing is totally a thing. I agree with others that say don't watch the clock... I'd just nurse until they fell asleep, and when they fell asleep I'd tickle their feet or make swirls on their cheeks to wake them back up and they'd just keep nursing. If I had to set a time limit I'd say I nursed 45-60 min each time. We had latch issues so I was not about to switch sides and risk not being able to latch again!! He nursed on one side for 45 mins when we were in the hospital and the nurses said "Mommys aren't pacifiers" and tried to talk me into limiting him to 15 mins per side. I didn't listen and then I had a huge supply of milk on that side when my milk came in. I would always offer the other side when they were done, too, but most of the time my babies stuck with one side. With my 2nd, she would stay on all day if I let her, so I had to start offering the paci... and having someone else hold her (if possible), so she would stop trying to nurse all the time. haha Some babies just really like to comfort nurse.
