@megpie: that's amazing!

I've been listening to the Power Broker, which is this phenomenal, Pulitzer prize winning account of how one person - backed by oil, automobile, construction, banking, etc interests - amassed massive power in New York that he used to build (largely toll) roads/bridges and to crush mass transit. The description of how much commutes suck as a result is incredibly well-written, and he talks a lot about how resigned people become to it. It's super depressing how much better commutes could have been if planners in the early 20th century had had different priorities...

I voted twice because it's 1-2 hours depending on the day/weather/traffic.

Before I had DS, I worked 10-6 so I could take the HOV lanes when they opened up to general traffic. But daycare is open 6:30 to 6:30 close to home, so I had to switch my hours to 8-4 so I'm home in time for pick up if DH can't do it.

It's usually not too bad getting to work at 7 a.m. But trying to get as far into VA as I can before 5 p.m. when leaving DC at 4 sucks.

DH works in sales so he's in his car all day. He works out in the county more, so our house is pretty centrally located. Plus he grew up in the burbs so it's where he's happiest (and I wouldn't be happy living in the congestion of the city. We wanted a yard and neighborhood community)

I do daycare drop off in the morning, which makes it closer to an hour (this includes stopping at Starbucks to pick up my preordered coffee, though 😂). Afternoon is about 30 min. We’re moving soon, and my morning commute should stay the same time, but afternoon will be a bit longer. So excited to get into our own house, though.

@dc yoga bee: also in the same area (nova). Traffic is SO bad. Blech. Definitely worse than when I was growing up here.

We both work from home, so we don't commute at all. The kids go to daycare about 7 minutes away. And my husband does have to travel internationally a lot. He just left for a two week trip.

@Ms.Mermaid: Right now biking isn't really an option b/c I won't do it on city streets with LO, but if we end up moving to the burbs - which seems likely - I'd ideally like to be near a rail-trail that links up with public transit so I could potentially bike into the city. Those bikes look awesome! I'd seen the trailers you can hook on the back that convert into strollers, but not the cargo bike solution...

I work 20 mins from home, so my commute is 40 minutes. I work 12 hour shifts and work a 0.7 position so I only commute 10 days/month.

My DH works 30-35 mins from home, so 60-70 minute commute daily. Maybe a bit longer coming home so maybe more like 1h20 mins daily. He works M-F.

@periwinklebee: is biking an option? I’m happy to chat kid carrying logistics and storage. I just bought a long tail e-assist cargo bike to help with my commute.

I used to commute an hour each way and changed to 3 miles - city traffic can sometimes suck, so driving is 15-35 minutes but biking is 25 minutes there/20 min home plus I get to ride my bike. My husband also rides or drives 2.5-3 miles to work.

I commute >2 he a day and it really impacts my quality of life. Like @LCTBQE, it's a balance between the house/community we can afford and accessibility to the city. Eventually I'll need to find something closer to home, but it will likely be a more boring, worse paying job.

I WAH, so zero.

My DH has about 1 hour each way, sometimes it’s more, especially if it rains. His office is less than 5 miles from home but we live in a heavily congested city and my DH takes a bus + train + taxi (sometimes a boat!) to get to work every day since there is no public transit near the office.

The girls' daycare is ~20min commute no matter how we go (public transportation or walking or car). My commute depends on the day--I sometimes work right near them, and sometimes work from home after dropping them off. Starting in Sept, 2 days/week I'll be commuting about an hour away.

So much of it is your attitude though. If you're commuting to a job that you don't like, any amount of time is negative. People think I am nuts to do this commute, but the perks I get are worth it to me.

I try to look at my super commute days as me time. I don't drive during that time, so I can read, watch a show on my ipad, do some of my volunteer work, or even take calls from the office, so I don't view it as totally wasted time. I instead look at it as 8 hours of time I week I have to get things done so I don't have to do them later. On the other days when I drive, I listen to NPR and it's how I catch up on the news.

@periwinklebee: yeah, I imagine that neighbors who you *own* with could get a lot hairier than neighbors who you just rent next to, especially if there's no condo board or whatever to reign them in. sounds like you could get lucky or unlucky...

my co-workers keep asking me how the new commute is. I say, what I lost in time I make up for in experience. I basically added 20 minutes each way, but I love having my own house as much as I thought I would, and as a bonus no one is trying to show me their dick or beg for money or crush me to death on the subway.
