@raintreebee: If the fever is gone that is great.

Yes, just contagious via feces so be careful with changing (maybe invest in disposable pads for the trip?). It sounds like you'll be fine to go.

Thanks, everyone. He is much better today. No fever and some of the sores are even disappearing. He is even in good spirits. My doctor said he is only contagious from feces at this point so she said there is no reason we shouldn't go. I feel nervous about exposing people, but I do trust her opinion. I think we will make a game time decision about it. Unfortunately, we have no one to leave him with here.

We had a mild case. Fri/Sat DD was fussy and not eating well with a mild fever. Sunday her fever spiked and the rash came...Monday we went to the peds...she was fine but had 3 sores on her mouth. We left town Weds and she was back in daycare Friday...

@raintreebee: ugh that really stinks, I'm so sorry. Do your in laws or anyone else trusted (who doesn't have kids that would be at risk of catching the HFM) live close that they could stay with your son so your husband could go with you at least?

@raintreebee: Our doctor said once the fever is gone and as long as the blisters aren't oozing its no longer contagious.

@raintreebee: Oh man, that's tough. DS had new spots appear for a good week, though it was really only uncomfortable for him for 3 or 4 days. How's he feeling today?

@Truth Bombs: @Smurfette: I was hoping that this was something that wasn't contagious after symptoms appear, but I keep reading otherwise. We are supposed to release my brothers ashes this weekend, and I will be so devastated if my son and husband can't be there with me for that. What unfortunate timing.

Our doctor said 5-7 days. LO had it pretty bad (worst our daycare has seen). She had a fever starting on Saturday (broke on Sunday). Her worst day was Monday/Tuesday. She returned to daycare on Friday. Now on Wednesday her feet are peeling pretty badly and she still is pretty marked up but not contagious.

When my LO had it, two days of fever, and then we stayed home for 4 more days till no more new spots turned up. If you see one new spot then your LO is contagious still and no way you should be on a flight.

HFM can be really uncomfortable for kiddos. I think that's a lot to have him traveling and out of his comfort zone and schedule when he's already feeling so badly. Not to mention, isn't he still contagious? I would reschedule the trip. Or see if you can exchange your tickets for your parents to come to you.

They were only really fussy for a few days - maybe 4 at most? But the dang blisters/spots (and subsequent dry, itchy patches as they healed) stuck around forever! Probably two weeks from the time we first started seeing the spots? They weren't too fussy that whole time, but I know it was uncomfortable because DD would rub her feet together frantically in her sleepsack during nap time and over night. We lathered her up with a ton of aquaphor and made her wear socks to bed. I hope your LO is feeling better soon!

@raintreebee: reactions seem to be all over the place.

We had it really mild. Two days out of daycare. Just general fussiness.

Hi. LO is on day #2 of hand, foot, and mouth. It has been a disaster. Fever, no sleeping, extreme fussiness, etc. All of this has coincided with the first week of teaching for me, of course! Anyway, we are supposed to fly to see my parents for the weekend (2 hour flight), and I'm wondering how do-able that is. We are going to take him back to the pedi tomorrow, but I'd love to know now whether the trip will be impossible.
