I usually got one right away, but if there were multiple women in labor at the birth center I'd have to wait a bit. I think the longest was about 40 minutes? It wasn't an emergency though, I I was just asking for tips to reduce swelling.

During labor, I don't remember. It felt like a long time and a short time since I lost all track of time. But when I called for mastitis, they didn't call back for a couple of hours. So I guess it depends.

During the work day, if it isn't an emergency they call back within an hour or so (on-call nurse). If its an emergency, they keep you on hold and put you through to a nurse right away. On off hours, they call back within 20 mins (or tell you to call again if you haven't heard from them).

Depends on how important the issue is!

It's always by the end of their work day (5pm), but if it's a pressing matter they call within 30 minutes. No nurses, just OBs.

I've had to call after hours and the rule of thumb is within 30 minutes.

Depends on what I'm calling about, although maybe this is weird but I never end up talking to my OB/midwife with either pregnancy - they would take a message and have a nurse call you, which usually took like 20-40 minutes. If the nurse could handle it she would, if she felt it was serious enough she would pass your info to one of the on-call OBs/midwives. And if it was a real emergency you were supposed to just call triage to get straight to the on-call OB/midwife quickly.

I should add that with both pregnancies I went to a practice where all of the doctors there work out of the same hospital. You can see just one person, but if you're in labor or having an emergency you get whoever is there/on-call at that time.

My time frame really depends on what I'm calling about, but it does seem weird that they don't have nurses to talk to you.

My practice always has nurses around both on and off hours to talk to people. They usually call back within 20 minutes, regardless of when you call.

If you call with a question for your midwife or OB, how long does it take for someone to call you back? How long do you think is reasonable?

My old ob/gyn had a nurse available during business hours and they would talk to you either immediately or within 20 minutes. The doctor would call within 2 hours. I never called after hours.

My current practice calls back quickly after hours-- probably because you might be in labor. However, it appears if you call during business hours they wait until the end of the day (often after business hours) and there isn't a nurse to speak with in the mean time.
