It felt like a long time and a short time since I lost all track of time. But when I called for mastitis, they didn't call back for a couple of hours. If its an emergency, they keep you on hold and put you through to a nurse right away. If the nurse could handle it she would, if she felt it was serious enough she would pass your info to one of the on-call OBs/midwives. And if it was a real emergency you were supposed to just call triage to get straight to the on-call OB/midwife quickly.</p> <p>I should add that with both pregnancies I went to a practice where all of the doctors there work out of the same hospital. How long do you think is reasonable?</p> <p>My old ob/gyn had a nurse available during business hours and they would talk to you either immediately or within 20 minutes. The doctor would call within 2 hours. I never called after hours.</p> <p>My current practice calls back quickly after hours-- probably because you might be in labor. However, it appears if you call during business hours they wait until the end of the day (often after business hours) and there isn't a nurse to speak with in the mean time. </p>
