@BoogieBea: at this point, some crying might be necessary so i'd start with the books and let him cry about that first. i'm sure it is a control issue for him as he grows older. i'm starting to see a tiny bit of this with my LO at bedtime since she is approaching 2. as you say, once you give in a few times, then they feel a sense of power and keep pushing the boundaries more and more.

30 minutes for bath and then it takes him 20-30 minutes to fall asleep. So 1 hour from bath to sleep. We don't do books before bedtime so that definitely cuts down a lot of the time to go to sleep. For our little guy, books just make him more alert and excited. So we'll do more calm activities like sing a song or count to ten. We tried books a few nights and he become wide awake so we decided no more books before bedtime. Maybe it'll change once he gets a little older.

@Andrea: yeah we'll try that. At first I didn't want to mess with his stuff. He remembers everything now. But it's just getting out of hand.

@BoogieBea: have you tried removing the books? I would take most of them away so he doesn't have so many choices?

From the start of bath to closing the door our bedtime routine is 30 minutes. Sometimes it can take 20 minutes and occasionally it will be 45 minutes if he protests but usually 30 minutes.

@miss-spunkin: he's 2 and a half. He's just purposely trying to push the envelope more each night. Our bedtime routine of bath, 3 books and a song worked wonderfully up until a month ago. It just got really bad this week when he added crying and tantrums into the mix.

Probably about 45 minutes. That involves bath, dressing, and nursing.

@Andrea: we used to have complete control over how long it takes. On average, it took about 40 minutes. He's 2 and a half. We did make the mistake of let him cross the line of how many books we read to him. So now he just keeps stacking the pile. And not only do we have to read the book but we have to discuss every picture on each page. He's just been building up his stalling tactics.

@BoogieBea: How old is your LO?
We don't have a night-time routine yet since my LO is 4-weeks-old, but I am reading up on it now so that I can be prepared when he's ready to get into a schedule.

LO loves going to bed at night! She would fall asleep without her bath and bottle if we let her. Probably just a half hour starting with bath time for us. She's fine in the bath, then it's a struggle to get her pj's on because she's so squirmy and tired, but then she's very happy when we feed her. She eats quickly, we put her in the crib, and then she makes a few noises, finds her thumb, and she's out. Nap time is a whole other story.

It used to be just one hour, but lately it's stretched to two or more! Lately I've been leaving earlier though, and just letting cry until he falls asleep. :-(

From bath time to finally closing the door, it took DH an hour and a half to do LOs bed time routine last night. And it still ended with frustration and having to leave LO one crying a bit before he went to sleep. I think we may need to do some more crying it out in the near future to get him to stop protesting going to sleep.
