I do a normal cold wash on heavy soil, followed by a heavy duty wash on hot with Tide Powder, again heavy soil. No extra rinses. It takes 2 hours. On my mom's washer it takes only 90 mins because her quick wash agitates enough. Mine only offers a quick rinse, which doesn't get them clean enough on the first cycle. Check your machine and detergent combo on Fluff Love.

I've never timed it, since I'm always doing other stuff and just come back later to move it along to the next stage in the process. Maybe 90 min? We do two cycles, one warm/warm no detergent and one hot/cold with detergent. Then line dry.

@brownepiano: I think they did. I went to the website and they only offered liquid. I looked briefly but didn't find it anywhere else. It seems pretty good so far except I am adjusting to these washing routine changes.

We do a quick cold wash and then a heavy wash hot with extra rinse. It takes ages... we use the BG liquid detergent. NYC has soft water and that makes diaper cleaning a lot easier.

I don't do extra rinses because of hard water. And you shouldn't need an extra rinse anyway I don't think. If you have hard water any time you wash you are potentially adding minerals to your diapers so the extra rinse is just potentially adding even more extra minerals. You would want to use water softeners with hard water to bind to the minerals so they don't get into your diapers instead. I do a quick wash on hot (40m) and the heavy duty wash with cold (72-80m) with extra clothes added to make mine 3/4 full. I just use gain liquid and calgon or borax.

Our routine takes a little over 90 min, rinse and then a hot wash with tide. I used to use BG powder detergent but it never cleaned well! So I switched to tide powder and it's great.

I think 90 min - 2 hours. I do a rinse cycle and then a wash with 1 or 2 rinses. I haven't timed it though.

Did BG stop making their powder? I am getting low and I'd been looking online. I was shocked to see it for $60 ish on Amazon but if they discontinued it that would make sense.

@MamaCate: sure! I got my water tested by bringing it to a pet store. They will test it in the fish department. Then I referenced these articles from fluff love university, which explains it better than I ever could: http://www.fluffloveuniversity.com/how-to-wash-cloth-diapers/dealing-with-hard-water-and-cloth-diapers/

And

@peaches1038: do you know how the extra rinse increases build up with hard water? I think we have hard water but I am not sure.

@T.H.O.U.: well we had a great system with the old detergent and now I am not sure what to do because they seem to be a little stinky now after washing the old way with the new detergent. I am trying the longer cycle this morning and win see if there is a difference.

@Ms maths: thanks! I guess I never thought about washing at night. We wash 3x/week so the time is really only an issue the one morning when I wash and need to be out the door for work (I am home today). But thanks for the new idea!

Depending on how long we wait (either two days or three days, for one kid in diapers), our cycle is between 2 and 3 hours. (The washing machine automatically adjusts for the weight of the load.)

We also line dry (in the basement in the winter); this can take up to a day, so the length of the wash cycle isn't that big of a deal. We normally put the diapers in the wash at night and then hang them early the next morning.

I do a quick wash and then a full wash on white heavy, so it's about 90 minutes? Maybe a little less. I dont do an extra rinse because we have hard water and it would just increase buildup.

We just switched from BG powder detergent to their liquid one--I couldn't find the powder. The wash instructions changed too so if I follow the directions, it looks like it is almost 2 1/2 hours of washing!

Before we did a pre rinse on cold (no detergent), took 30 minutes, then a full wash on regular cycle plus extra rinse, which eas a little over an hour. The new detergent says to do a full wash, then heavy duty wash, the extra rinse which looks like it is adding 60-90 minutes of wash time. I usually wash in the morning so that everything dries on the line during the day.

So tell me, is this normal?
