@LCTBQE: Yep, came straight from my OBGYN who practiced for 40 years before retiring 2 seconds after my son was born. I was SO sick during my pregnancy he told me to just stop taking the prenatals and take the folic acid pills since they are so tiny. And even then sometime during my 2nd trimester he was like you don't have to take those anymore, the neural tubes are established at this point.

I remember in my 3rd trimester I could not stop drinking milk and eating cheese and having cereal before bed and my son came out with unbelievably long, SUPER strong limbs and in the meantime my nails were breaking and cracking and my doctor was laughing at me because he was like that boy is sucking all your calcium out from under you.

I did not take prenatals as regularly as I should have when I got my positive test. Just start taking them. I would not be too worried, just check in with your Dr at your first appointment if it's still bothering you.

Your baby will get what it needs from you - prenatal are mostly there to support the mom who's getting depleted as the baby sucks all the nutrients from your body. If you've been eating a relatively balanced diet you are probably just fine. Take the prenatals and get your folic acid in but don't worry too much about it.

I was paranoid I harmed my baby because I wasn't taking prenatals when we concieved and found out I was pregnant. Just start taking them now and continue throughout your pregnancy. The nutrients already in your body has already helped your baby.

Take it. Your body will store some, so it's great that you were taking vitamins within the last year. I did the exact same thing and everything turned out fine. Was taking prenatals, stopped, started again once I got a BFP. Happened with both babies and both are healthy. Folic acid is also great for you and baby will suck any that is available leaving none for you. It truly makes a difference in maternal brain functioning!

As long as you take them when you can, anything helps. There's women out there that did not know they were pregnant so they might not have taken anything.

Even when I was pregnant with HG, I was sick and throwing up so much that I could not take any pills. I was afraid I was harming my babies. My OB was not worried about the lack of weight gain or lack of nutrients I was getting. (Though, I was in the hospital twice to get fluids.) She said the babies were growing so she was not concerned. The baby will take from your body and anything extra you take is for yourself. But yeah, take all the added vitamins and folic when you can and as suggested by your dr. Anything helps, but from my experience, don't feel bad if you miss a few days.

Not sure if I understand your question, but it's recommended to take prenatal vitamins throughout pregnancy...

I had started to take pre-natal vitamins at the beginning of TTC. But after about 7 months, I stopped.

We conceived on month 15 and as soon as I found out, I started to take them again.

How long does it take for the nutrients/vitamins to reach the fetus? Is there a point in taking folic acid after I find out? Or is it too late to catch the neural tube window?
