When DS2 wouldn't fall asleep after MOTN feedings, I'd stick him in the rock n play with the vibration on and rocked it. He would usually be out in a few minutes. Both my boys liked the vibration at that age. I would also try a swing.

Sounds about like both my kids and my daughter (LO2) is so much better of a sleeper than my son was. But as a newborn, while she napped great during the day, we went through many weeks of rough evenings with her. She would wake constantly. Or she would take hours to get back to sleep. I remember both DH and I spending like 2-3 hours trying to get her to sleep for many nights! And it would be midnight before she finally settled for the night. It sucked. The hair dryer seemed to work for us.

I just chalked it up to being a newborn. Things started getting better when she was around 7 weeks. They say it peeks at 6 weeks.

Hang in there!

@Mrs. Pinata: LO was the same way, only for naps too. I dreaded anything to do with sleep. DH and I finally couldn't shush and bounce anymore so I would nurse her for an hour, she wouldn't take a paci, to get her to sleep. I hope you find something that works! It is so rough.

@Mrs. Pinata: Do you have a swing? Do you need to borrow one? That was one of the very few places that little miss would manage at night. And during the day too.

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: Well, I wouldn't be surprised if she needed US, but after 5-10 minutes of rocking or cuddling it's like she has had ENOUGH and wants to be put down. But, apparently not in her Rock & Play. ha! I'm so glad we splurged for that because I don't think she would be sleeping well at all in a flat crib!

Nighttime was worse the second time around for us too. It was almost like little miss needed that extra bonding, that heartbeat, that warmth, that presence to be able to sleep consistently for any length of time. She made me a very reluctant co-sleeper for a time just because it helped her sleep longer stretches which allowed me to sleep AT ALL. Naps during the day were fine but night time sleep.... Wish I had some words of wisdom! Just support!

@ShootingStar: That's so interesting! This girl will NOT fall asleep during a feed no matter what time or day or night, which is the total opposite of DS! I can totally relate although often DH is soothing DS, who got woken up by DD! :/ I need to remember that this phase doesn't last forever, but with DS the first 3 months were SO easy! I got lulled into a false sense of "newborn bliss."

When DS was a newborn he would just fall asleep during the day for naps when he was tired. But nighttime was much more difficult. I can remember being totally overwhelmed trying to get him to sleep by myself for what felt like forever, while DH was usually cleaning. I also remember thinking I must have the only baby on the planet that didn't fall asleep after breastfeeding.

But that phase was pretty short lived. Maybe by 2 months or so, he would fall asleep much easier.

I did not have a sleepy newborn. She was awake a lot, but she didn't cry much for the first two months. Then, starting at 8 weeks, she would scream for hours and hours on end. That stopped after we discovered she had MSPI and I eliminated dairy when she was about 8 weeks old.

Hang in there, Mama

@Mrs. Pinata: I'm pretty sure mine did this. We didn't even try to lay her down until we had her asleep for a few hours. Otherwise it was just like you describe. Then there was a switch sometime in the night and she'd go back to sleep super easy. Morning was usually pretty quick and then it just got harder and harder throughout the day to get her to sleep. I think that's why we gave up even trying to lay her down in the evenings.

@HappyBaker: ha! I feel EXACTLY the same way you do! DH just keeps telling me that I'm forgetting what it was like, but I feel like I remember DS just falling asleep on his own when he was tired. That is NOT the case with DD so far. :) I can't decide if he's right or not. :)

@oliviaoblivia: You're super lucky! I wish it was that way with her. :)

@Mae: That's so interesting! So much better than getting day and night confused! I think DD would be a mess if she slept that little during the day though.

@namaste: This sounds really similar to our DD. And I agree that our DD tries to stay awake as much as she can, which it the total opposite that DS was! Maybe it's girls?

Subscribing to this thread - my new LO is 2 weeks on Monday and I really don't remember it being this hard to get LO #1 to fall asleep 2 years ago! But maybe that is the kind of thing we black out? DH and I are taking shifts this time around at night and it seems its always on my shift that the baby just will not fall asleep!

My experience is probably unique but both DDs have just kind of fallen asleep when they need to. Anytime they've had trouble sleeping I put them in the swing and they're asleep within minutes.

It can be anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours really. She will get a little fussy some nights but mostly she just tries to stay awake. She'll be 3 weeks on Monday.

During the day my LO never napped consistently until 8 weeks. Sometimes she'd go all day with only two 30 min naps because I just couldn't get her to sleep. And she never slept in the evening. 3-8pm were hell and screaming every night. Bedtime was always super easy at that age though. I nursed to sleep or if she wasn't asleep when I was done I just rocked her a little and she was out. It was never really an effort to get her to sleep at that point (bedtime was between 830 and 930 then). For MOTN feedings it was usually the same until 6am or so, although we of course had those times where she required maybe 20-30 min of rocking and shushing to get her down. But I realize my kid was a pretty rock star night sleeper from the start and I don't know that that was totally normal.

Maybe I'm totally forgetting what it's like to have an infant, but how long does it take you to calm your baby and fall asleep for naps? Sweet P (her nickname!) will be 4 weeks tomorrow (I can't believe it!), and she often has a hard time falling asleep and it takes a LONG time to calm her down. I don't remember Little P being like this, but maybe he was?

We feed her every 3 hours to make sure she's getting enough feedings in the day, but in the evening, and sometimes as late as her feedings around midnight she will NOT fall asleep. It will take us as long as 2 hours to calm her down, with rocking, swaying then laying her down calm, only for her to start screaming again and us trying to start all over. I don't know if this is colic or other tummy issues or normal babies "stuff." Our pediatrician says we're doing all we can do and sometimes you CAN'T make a baby calm down and sleep, but it's exhausting for everyone! Plus, her room is right next door to Little P's, so it often wakes him up if he's already sleeping, which then means BOTH of us are up attempting to soothe a baby.

Usually during the day, we feed her, have some awake time, and then when she starts looking sleepy we swaddle her and rock her until she's pretty much sleeping, then we put her in the Rock & Play and she will sleep for an hour or two (with a wake up here or there that needs soothing), but this does NOT work for at least 2-4 "cycles", usually late evening. What is your experience? Does this seem normal?
