My DD finally stopped at about 15 months. What finally worked for us was giving it no attention at all. We didn't even tell her "no." Once we stopped reacting then she stopped the throwing. I would say it took about 1 week of consistently ignoring the behavior. Good luck!

@Anagram: when you ignore it, do you give more food? C is driving me nuts with this.

@avivoca: c is 13 months and the food (and utensil. And cup) dropping phase is in full force. And it's hard to know what's an accident and what is on purpose. Driving me crazy.

I don't know the exact month but I know we were still struggling at 18 months and at 24 months things were waaaaay better.
It was hard having an older baby who did that shite because we got a lot of judgmental comments but I honestly couldn't figure out how to stop it until she was developmentally able to understand the consequences. Good luck!

@daniellemybelle: @jetsa: it's driving me nuts. I hate that my dog is hanging around eating people food because it is so bad for her. I hope she gets the hang of it soon. I took her food away the second she started dropping it and sent the dog into the living room.

We struggle with this too. I always thought the "natural consquence" would be taking her food away until she can "be nice" but she is such a finnicky eater that she'd starve that way! So I usually just say, "No ma'am," and go on without making too big of a deal. It drives me nuts though.

@avivoca: I'm afraid to jinx it, but my LO *just* started improving in the throwing. Now, she throws just when she is finished, whereas before she would throw everything immediately and/or sweep all the food off the tray.

My mom is visiting for two weeks and told me to stop saying "uh oh" and "no" and to just ignore her throwing completely. Which is hard for me...extremely hard.

And the first few times, LO swept the whole tray with her arm and got half the food off...but I didn't make a sound or face, didn't look at the food...basically no positive/negative reinforcement....and after a few meals like that, she has stopped!

These cheeky kids. They are so smart!

@Applesandbananas: Same with my LO! He "shares" with the dogs. He doesn't do it to signify that he's done eating. It's more like, "A bite for me, a bite for Dew. A bite for me, a bite for Max."

He rarely did it after 13m; by then he was signing all done and we ended the meal immediately when he signed that or if he threw food.

He's almost 18m and still does it, but we have a dog, which makes it worse I think. He gets the biggest kick out of "sharing" with the dog.

We went through a throwing phase around 9-10 months and now at almost 12 months she rarely throws anything. What helped for us was ending the meal immediately as soon as food was thrown.

Recently, H has started throwing food and banging it on her high chair tray when she is either not hungry, bored, or done eating. She's only 11 months old, but a) how long does it last and b) any tips on how to correct the behavior in a pre-toddler?
