@Foodnerd81: OK, I went back through the archives to see what it was like at that age, and it was as I remembered. A total crap-shoot! Every single day would be so different. Some nights I could nurse to sleep, but more often, I think I was rocking and bouncing baby to sleep any way possible. I remember some rough nights when it would take well over an hour. But it does get better. My best advice is to really try and stick to a regular bedtime routine. Even if she's so young and can't fall asleep right away, I think the consistency makes it easy down the line. K's now 6+ month and she's usually out less than 30 min. from the start of her bath-time (beginning of bedtime routine). Knock on wood though, she hasn't been nursing to sleep as well lately.

At that age about an hour! Nursing, rocking/bouncing, swaddle, burp. Now at 7 months I'm down to about 30 minutes. I do put him down awake but he needs to be drowsy enough so it just takes the time that it takes.

@Foodnerd81: my baby is 10 weeks tomorrow and my husband puts her to bed every night. We do bath, lotion, pjs, then bottle and burp-- sometimes she's out by the time the burping is over so he'll swaddle her and put her in the crib already asleep. Other times, she's still awake, so he'll swaddle first after the burping and hold her upright patting her for a few minutes till she drops off. Usually only 15 minutes or so. He's really good at getting her down.

Naps during the day are a different story. She's still not on any schedule (I tried and gave up on that when it became apparent she was not ready to fall into a schedule).

Pretty much the only thing that's routine is the 7:30 bath and asleep by 8. But that's when she's tired anyway.

I nurse to sleep 90% of the time, but when I don't is usually about 10mins to bounce her to sleep all the way, but sometimes under 5mins! If I put her down to soothe herself to sleep, she rarely does, but if she does it takes about 35mins. (my baby is 15wks btw)

It used to take anywhere from 20-30 min (just the time to get him to go to sleep). Now it takes about 5 min, I sing him a song and put him down awake. Our whole routine is about 20 minutes total (bath, boob, book, bed).

@pastemoo: ha I've been trying to get her to like books. So far I've gotten her to look towards the book (note sure if she is looking right at it or in that dirction$ for half of a book, once, then she stared at my face as I read, which I figure is also good. I can't wait to read to her more-- but maybe not for hours.

@Foodnerd81: I think that;s probably pretty good. :) Now bedtime involves LOTS of reading. So if I was game, it could last hours--but I'm usually only good for 3-6 books or a few pages of poems.

@pastemoo: I guess we are te reverse- she fights going to sleep and naps are very very hit or miss, but she only wakes up once at night to eat and usually goes right back down after that. She started doing that at only a few weeks old really so that's lucky.

She's finally down now. Hopefully the extended nursing session means extra hours of sleep!

I was always very lucky with this--every once in a while it would be hours but usually 15-30 minutes from 3 months to now (16 months). Bedtime has been the one part of parenting that we lucked out. He was born on bedtime easy street.
Night wakings are a whole nother ball game.

From 0-3 months we just put him down when he was sleepy so there was no "bedtime" to speak of. I mean... maybe it was 30 seconds.

@autumnlove: wipe her gums? Is this something I'm supposed to be doing??

She's 5 months now and we start bath time at 7:15 and she's asleep by 8, I start nursing around 7:30.

Back when she was brand new it used to take a long time. I'd have to rock her for up to half an hour after she was done nursing just to ensure she wouldn't wake up as soon as I put her down.

Around 13 weeks, I was able to start putting N down in his crib awake at night. He usually goes right to sleep, like he did tonight. Naps are still a battle though. I hate when it takes 45 minutes to get him to nap and then he wakes up 20 minutes later!

My baby started to put herself to sleep around 8 weeks! She stops latching when she is full, I wipe her gums down and then I put her in the crib. She sucks her thumb for a minute or two and then she is out.

LO is two months, and not really on a schedule quite yet. I will usually feed her, burp her, and place her on my chest with a pacifier. I will rub her back and sing softly for about 15-20 minutes, and then she's out.

Sometimes A falls asleep nursing (like tonight - yea!), but if not I rock with him or lie in bed with him on my chest while DH reads. Usually anywhere between 10 and 20 minutes after he finishes eating he will fall asleep. We sometimes rock in the RnP, too, and he fusses at first, but it usually takes the same amount of time.

C is 7 weeks and we usually nurse to sleep but lately she's not quite asleep when she finishes eating. I sit there bouncing and rocking her, sometimes feeding her again, rocking more, forever. It actually took an hour yesterday to get her down for her nap (after she was done really eating but still comfort nursing and snacking), and she only took an hour and ten minute nap. Nights are often better but not always. I get so bored plus my back is starting to act up.

How long does it take to get your infant to sleep? I try just rocking her in the RnP and she definitely knows the difference
