You can get a newer one on Craigslist for under $100. I just sold my old washer and dryer (from 2007) on CL for $150 total, and there was nothing wrong with the dryer.

Our dryer quit working and we had it repaired for less then $100. But it's only 5 years old and we didn't want to replace it! I can't remember what the problem was at the moment.

If my dryer was that old I would probably replace it unfortunately. Buying appliances is no fun!

@PurplePeony: Ooh good point about it being more energy efficient...I'll have to bring that up with him!

If it's that old, I would just invest in a new dryer. We bought ours off of Craigslist when we bought our house. It's two years old and came with a warranty.

I would get a new one. The first thing we did at our TH was upgrade the washer and dryer. SOO worth it!

A new one is likely to be a LOT more energy-efficient. I'm usually in favor of fixing things, but old appliances suck up so much energy I'd lean toward scrapping it and getting a new one.

Our dryer crapped out this weekend. It still works, but the heating element is broken, so it doesn't dry (kind of a problem!). The previous owners of our house left all of the appliances, so I knew the dryer was old, but DH was examining it to look into parts and discovered it's 22 years old! That seems really old, and I don't think it's worth fixing. DH is convinced he can fix it for under $100, but is it really worth the time and effort to fix a 22-year-old dryer?

What would you do? How long did your dryer last? Would you have your DH attempt to fix it, or would you try and get him to agree to buy a new one?
