My oldest brother has two boats, and he bought them cash. They aren't big--one is kind of a speed boat, the other is a smaller fishing boat.

My car is financed for 2 years. It's only that short because I was part of the VW diesel buyback so that paid for most of the new car. We could have technically paid it all in cash but it didn't make sense with a 0% loan offer. I am pretty excited to have the car only be 2 years old when it's paid off!

In the future I hope to limit car loans to 3 years, even if it is at a low or 0 percent rate. I have not had good luck keeping cars for longer than 5 years (mostly through situations outside my control) so I want there to be a lot of life in the car once it is paid off.

4 years. I wanted a 3 year loan like we'd previously had, but with a new car that made the payments a bit much.

@psw27: good point. We have had 2 boats one we had for 6-7 years and sold for more than we bought it for. Certain boats that are rare/popular are sought after. Our current boat we got at about 20 % lower than market because we had to drive 4 hours out of our way. Similar boats with higher miles are thousands more so it was worth the time/inconvenience

Our boat loan is 8 years. The interest rate was the same as a 4 year so we can pay more monthly and treat it like a shorter loan.

I don't know how long it was set for but I paid above what I had to and finished within 36 months, probably earlier so I could replace car payment with daycare payment.

@NCSUchick27: this makes sense.

My best assumption is that a car is a "need" and a boat I see a "want". I also assume that people are trying to keep thier payments under a certain threshold for a want item, and maybe that's why they're willing to finance for longer? after learning this yesterday, DH called a friend who owns a boat and he said his was financed for 12yrs. It did take me back to when I was purchaseing my car, the sales lady brought out the 6,7,8 yr finance sheet first. I had to make her go back and get the 3,4,5 instead.

Wow I'm surprised that the financing is for such a long period of time. Perhaps it's because boats don't depreciate in value as quickly as cars? We financed our car for 4 years, mostly because the interest rate is close to 0% so it was worth spreading it out.

My car loan is 5 years at 0%. I probably would not choose a long-term loan if the interest rate was high since you end up paying so much extra. I'd rather wait and save extra $$ for a large down payment if it was a luxury item such as a boat.

Our last car was a 5 year loan. It was at 0% interest though, so there was no reason not to finance it.

I would have to really think about how much the interest rate was and run the numbers before I decided about taking on a long term loan. 3% at 15 years is a lot different than 7% and I am very conservative when it comes to paying for things like that. I would also look into the maintenance, insurance, slip fees, whatever and compare that to other activities to see if it makes sense.

We don't have a car payment right now. The car they we recently paid off was financed for 5 years, but we paid it off in less than 3.

My parents have an RV that is financed for 15 years. They will most likely pay it off well before then. In general I think you can't really compare the financing between cars and recreational vehicles. My parents' RV is actually considered a second home by the IRS, and they can deduct the interest on their taxes.

My car is financed for 5 years. Our hope is to never have more than one car payment at a time- my husband doesn't use his car for work so that's an advantage. Since we do have a car payment and a mortgage and are only two years into both, I would not want to take on any other long term loan unless we really needed to.

One of my best friend's just bought a boat and they financed for 10 years. I was surprised to hear that because I too had never thought of financing longer than 5 years.
We typically finance our vehicles for 4-5 years.

DH and I recently started boat shopping, and I was just running the numbers in my head, and it never occurred to me to go past 5 years. The boat salesman informed us that most boats are financed between 10 and 15 years 😱. I had a mini heart attack. I know it's not exactly the same as a car, but still it made me wonder. If your vehicle or recreational vehicle is financed, how long? My car is 48 months (crv) and DH truck (ram 1500) is 60 months.
