Your body will soon adjust! I didn't experience engorged boobs until month 2. I think it lasted a month or so for me.. Good luck!

I can't tell if I have a super small supply or efficient baby because im the one ending the session as she comfort nurses or nibbles. She will never accept the nipple back when I do this, but I literally cannot stand the sensation of her using me as a pacifier.

@Mrsdaredevil: It depends on where/how you store it.

I have been pumping either after sessions or between sessions to relieve engorgement. I don't pump too much since I am worried about supply and demand....usually 6 ounces In a 24
hour period.

How long does frozen breast milk last?

@Nskillet: she has pretty easy to read signs. She pretty much will just refuse my nipple when she is done. Sometimes she falls asleep during feedings but I work hard to keep her awake, like getting her naked or changing her diaper.

I was like that in the beginning too. I took advantage of it and pumped some of it for storage. I started pumping less and less each day and eventually it did get better, and now as a bonus I have a small freezer stock ready for whenever I need it!

It does get better! Keep up the great work!

Your supply will even out and baby will get better at eating (wait for that 3 week spurt!).

I had a similar issue. There were a few things going on. The first was that LO's latch wasn't good. So when she ate she didn't get as much as she could have. Once that was fixed, I pumped after every session. This was good because it helped me begin my frozen supply for when I went back to work. And it kept my body's supply where I wanted it to be. Eventually though, your body will figure out what amount you're supposed to produce and the general times that you'll be feeding/pumping soyou won't leak as much.

This seems to never be the case for me. I'm only engorged in the mornings because we tend to supplement with formula overnight to give my bips a break!

My question is how do you know when LO is done? I usually pop my DD off when I stop hearing swallows. I swear it occasionally feels like she is gnawing on me/nibbling which isnt comfortable!

I had to pump about an ounce before I fed Cecilia, so she wouldn't get flooded and then when she was done I'd pump another ounce or so in order not to leak. It took about 6 weeks before everything evened out, but I was always an oversupplier! I could have easily fed two babies.

Cabbage leaves help with engorgement. I remember my breasts felt hard as rocks and hurt so much.

LO is almost 5 weeks now. Definitely listen to the advice from @runsyellowlites and if you pump or hand express (I find hand expressing to be the least painful when I'm engorged) only do enough to feel better. I made the mistake of expressing until almost empty and am now dealing with a major oversupply.

I second kellymom, it's the best resource out there for breastfeeding!

Like others have said it will pass!

If you pump to relieve the engorgement, be sure to just do enough to feel a bit better. Breast milk is 100% supply & demand so if you're feeding & pumping your body will continue to make that amount.

You can also try a warm shower & just let them release milk on their own.

If it doesn't start to go down after the 2 week growth spurt you may want to look into block feeding. I had to do this bc I have over active letdown & oversupply so DD was getting too much foremilk & not enough hind milk.

Also check out kellymom.com it's the best breastfeeding resource I've found & the only reason I'm still breastfeeding!

it will definitely get better. engorgement is the worst in the beginning. pumping will definitely relieve engorgement so you can try that between sessions!

It will get better very soon. You're still in the initial engorgement phase, which should pass stat. You may still leak and feel full for the first couple of months, but around 10 or 12 weeks things tend to get magically better when your supply truly regulates.

Your body will adjust - supply and demand. Right now you are oversupplying and baby isn't yet super efficient at emptying the breast. Also, your baby's tummy is still growing and a feeding now is smaller than it will be in a week or so. Have you tried expressing some to relieve some of the pressure? Now is a great time to start building up a freezer stash if you have an oversupply of milk. Also, hot packs like a washcloth soaked in hot water can provide some relief in the meantime. It totally gets better - the engorgement does get less intense.

I remember thinking the exact same thing, its not forever. Your supply just has to work itself out. I still leak a little during the day, but not nearly as much as I did in the first week or two. It really does get better!!!! Keep doing your best and try not to get discouraged :)

My LO is one week old and I am having some serious boob trouble. They are constantly so hard and engorged, even right after I feed her! I have even started using ice packs on them just to relieve some of the pain. I am constantly leaking milk everywhere. I feel like I have enough for three babies!

Will it be like this for as long as I breastfeed? Any tips or advice?
