Early on babies sleep so much. When we were trying to get LO on a good schedule (not getting days and nights mixed up) we didn't let her sleep more than 3 hours per nap. But once she showed us she was a good napper and bedtime sleeper we let her nap as long as she wants.

Very early on she slept 8 hours at night and her first nap would be super long - 3-4 hours...her doc (and some books) say it is a continuation of night sleep so let them sleep. Then she started sleeping 12-13 hours at night and her naps were usually 1.5-2 hours. The only nap I really worried about waking her from was the last nap of the day...didn't want it to be too long and push bedtime too late

And when she went through growth spurts she would sleep a ton and I just let her sleep

I let her sleep as much as she wants. Sleep begets more sleep if you ask me. On Monday she slept from 1-5 pm and it was great, igot a ton done and she was super happy when daddy got home from work.

For the first couple of months, I never let my daughter nap through a feeding time. That was my rule. So automatically every 3 hours she had to be up to eat. However, this wasn't usually much of a problem for me, since my daughter refuses to sleep in chunks of more than 20-30 minutes at a time.

My LO took a few 3 hour naps but her typical nap lasts 2 hours now at 4.5 months old. I never woke her from a nap after the first two weeks when they suggested feeding every 2 hours. Also keep in mind that for babies, sleep begets sleep so long naps don't necessarily mean bad night sleep. It's the opposite!

My almost 6 week old naps for anywhere from 1 to 4 hours at a time. I don't wake her up if she is sleeping, unless her naps go past 7:00 p.m. Then, I wake her up because I know she won't go down until midnight.

She pretty much just lets me know when she is tired... I can't argue with that!

Toddler girl used to nap for 5 hours at a time and still sleep at night. Delightful. I say that every baby is different so I would just let her sleep for a few days, she might just be consolidating some shorter naps into a longer one which is fantastic.

@zippylef: I've tried that too! She just fights sleep. :(
She just doesn't need as much sleep as other babies I guess?

My LO still sleeps really well at night and she sometimes takes 3+ hour long naps. I just let her sleep for however long she wants. She's never given me trouble at bedtime.

For those who are having trouble with fighting sleep at bedtime, a strict schedule and an earlier bedtime were what solved that for us. We were starting bedtime at 7 and putting her down between 7:30-8 and she would fight us so bad. So we started doing bedtime at 6 and now she goes to bed between 6:30 and 7 and goes down with no problem.

How old is your little one? If they are very little (under 6 months) they probably need 2 2 hour naps and 1 1 to 2 hour nap. So, it sounds like your little one may be over tired. For nap information I recommend Babywise or the Baby Whisperer if you want to be scheduled. I will tell you my son never took a longer than 45 minute nap until he was 9 months old. So he was always overtired.

Hmmm, I never wake my kids up from naps... DS is 13 weeks, and he normally takes a 3+ hour nap every day, so I definitely don't think 2 hours is too long, for a normal infant.

Idk if it would help you, but I track all of DS's stuff on an app on my phone. He generally sleeps about 5 hours in naps and 10 hours in nighttime sleep. Tracking it helps me see days where he's had a lot of nap sleep (then I might push bedtime back a bit) or too little nap sleep (then I might push bedtime up a bit); as long as he gets 15 hours in throughout the day, though, I follow his cues and let him sleep on demand.

My LO is horrible with sleeping so perhaps I'm not the best resource. But if she's sleeping, I let her sleep!
She's so unpredictable with her sleeping patterns.

There are days where she naps for 3 hours, some only a hour, some 2 hours and some 30 minutes. At night usually she won't go down till 11pm even though we start to get her down around 7pm. Only recently I have been successful twice in getting her down around 930/1000pm! Hopefully I didn't just jinx myself! :P

Sorry for all of the questions lately, but LO is switching things up on me and it's totally rocking my confidence as a momma! We had her napping and night sleeping down until the past couple of days. She would nap about 1 hour 3-4 times a day, and go to sleep for the night around 8-8:30. Well, for the past couple of nights, she's been fighting going down for the night (11:30 one night, 9:30 the next) and has been wanting to take longer naps. I woke her up from her nap yesterday after 1`hr 20 min because I was afraid she wouldn't sleep good that night, and I wound up with a cranky baby the rest of the day, and she still didn't go to sleep for the night easily. So today, I thought I'd try letting her nap as long as she wanted, We're going on 2 hours now. Is that too long? Is it ok to let her sleep as long as she wants or will that make problems for bedtime? I'm so confused as to what's best when it comes to baby sleep. :( Thanks!
