Last year the school I worked at had 1/2 day and got out at 1. This year they get out at 2. I'm a big proponent of full day kinder.

The district I work in has all day kinder from 7:30-2:45. They offer an after school program, but some parents send their children to other daycares that pick them up from the school and take them to daycare until the parents pick them up.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I just looked ours up (since LO isn't obviously in kindergarten yet) and they have AM/PM sessions. AM is 8:45 – 11:15 a.m and PM is 12:30 – 3:15 p.m.

@regberadaisy: Thankfully, every school I have dealt with has their own in house program. You drop them off and pick then up at school and the program is often staffed largely by school staff. They typically offer breakfast and play before school and then after there is snack, homework time and lots of free play with some organized activities thrown in. Since schools will even help facilitate after school activities if the school offers then they will get your child to the right place and make sure they get back to where they belong afterwards. It is still a paid program but they are usually pretty decent.

Ours is full day, around 9-3 I think. We have the option of pulling them out for half days but apparently it's not a common choice. Part of the issue being the morning is all the structured stuff and the afternoons are lunch, recess, art, pe, music etc.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I remember when my - not so little any more! - cousin was in grade school. He went to after school programs right in his school. I wonder if that's still available?

I know daycare and the Y,, etc have before and after care program. But honestly the thought of adding another step into my child's day going from A to b to c and bussing them again is not appealing to me. I like knowing they will be in one spot all day and not worry about if they got from a to b safely.

Ours go from 8:15-3:15. If you have to be at work before or after those times, you pay for a before and after school program to bus your kid to and from school or arrange for other child care.

The school district I work in has full day kindergarten. I work in a low-income area and a lot of the kiddos at my school really need the full-day educational exposure. That said, almost half their day is lunch, recess, and specials (gym, art, music, technology, library) - which I think are equally important!

Ours are full day, although there may be some half day programs in private schools. However, I'd think the kids may be behind in first grade if they didn't go to full day kindergarten just because of how academically intense school is these days.

I think, at least in my area, kindergarten is like first grade was when I was in school. Likewise, pre-k is what our kindergarten was 20-30 years ago. When I tell people what kindergarteners are expected to know at the beginning of the year and how I have to prepare my pre-k students, they are really shocked.

@avivoca: They usually offer YMCA Fun Company before & after care at public schools. It does suck that you have to pay for it.

I don't think they offer half day kindergarten anymore around here. I know when my brother (now 16) was in kindergarten my mom (SAHM) wished they had half days because he still took a nap. I don't think they do naptime in kindergarten anymore either. Maybe a short "quiet" time but no one really sleeps with all the commotion.

I would love the option for half day kindergarten, assuming I keep working part time, if my mom was able to pick her up some days & she could nap & play. School seems just too structured for 5 year olds these days!

Having said that, LO is going to "school" 9-3 right now 3 days a week and I imagine by preschool we will do 5 days 9-3 so it would be what she is used to. It's just the overly structured days that bother me.

Ours is full day 5 days a week.

The jump last year (we also do a junior K and then senior K year) was hard having done 2-2 hour preschool mornings a week to suddenly doing full day. It took until say, October/November to get into the swing of things.

But then this summer my daughter got back into the nap routine. And again going to a full day has been hard.

That being said, she has flourished at school, so we love it...once we find our groove :)

@regberadaisy: my friend is worried about that for her district. She wants to go back to work (nurse) and will have a 7-7 schedule, but K is from 9:45-11:30.

I agreed with her that it's the most absurd schedule! She'll need someone to watch both kids & get the oldest to/from school.

Our district offers full day and half day programs. But the full day isn't 8 hours, it's more like 6 or 7. The kids get picked up on the bus around 8:30 and are home around 3.

ETA: D's in full time daycare, so when he gets to kindergarden he'll have to do the full day program with after care, so essentially the same hours he's used to.

Our school district has all day kindergarten, which feels like a lot to me! C will likely go from a 2.5 hour long preschool to an 8 hour school day!

We are considering moving & have our eyes on two specific towns. One has a half day kindergarten while the other is a 2:45 session!

Our friends live in the latter district, and their K schedule matches our current preschool schedule. How do working parents swing that?!

What does your K schedule look like? If you have all day kindergarten, do you like or dislike it? Why?
