I have overproduction and a fast letdown, Sawyer nurses only 1 side at a time 90% of the time, and it only takes him 6-7 minutes usually to feed (actual on-breast time he does 2 mins, then I stop to burp, then 4-5 minutes). When he is really hungry (at night usually) he will still usually only do 1 side, but stay on for 10-12 minutes.

My LO ate every 3 hours and about 15-20 minutes per side as a newborn. He let me know when he was done but "comfort" sucking - which let me know there was no milk left, or he'd doze off. :)

This sounds a lot like my LO. She's always been a super quick nurser. She's had a ridiculous amount of wet and poopy diapers from day one and most often seems satisfied after 10mins on one breast. The only time she nurses longer or I offer the second is when she's being a fuss-pot.

We just had her weighed today and at two weeks old she's already gained a pound from her birth weight. She does the same thing where she'll cough while nursing and I have to take her off. Our Dr said its likely her getting too much milk when my hind milk lets down, because she hasn't quite regulated her sucking. I bet you're doing just fine!

@winniebee: Congrats! I was wondering if you had your baby, since you've been MIA on the boards recently. It sounds like you might be producing a lot of milk and it's coming out quickly, given that he's choking. So he might be getting a lot of food in a very short period of time. You could call your pediatrician if you're really worried, but I bet his weight will be way up by your next weight check. If he's not acting hungry, then he's probably getting plenty of food.

FWIW, my baby would suck on each side for 15 minutes (so 30 mins total) and still only get 1 oz or less. Plus she was (and is) a pretty lazy sucker. I think I'd rather have your problem than mine...

@Mrsdaredevil: most of what I read said at least 10 mins! In the hospital our pediatrician had mentioned 7-10 mins per side sort of as a minimum.

I do have to say that when he is nursing he is a really good sucker and doesnt take many breaks. Seems like everyone elses babies eat for so long!!!!

He could just be a really efficient sucker and is getting enough to satisfy him quickly. If he doesn't show hunger signs in between feedings then I wouldn't worry about it!

My LO starts to cough sometimes too because she gets too much. I had no idea they should nurse for 10 minutes on each side....mine nurses for at lleast 25 each side!!t

When mine was little he at for a good hour, but that's because he would doze off all the time. He also ate every 2-3 hours. Have you had any doctor's appointments to check his weight gain? At the end of the day if he seems content and satisfied I'll bet he's doing just fine.

when my baby was a week old she would nurse forever 30 mins+ and then in less than an hour she would want to nurse again, but now at 5 weeks she is much more efficient. she still coughs during feeding, because my milk comes out very forcefully

I think I missed that you had your baby!! Congrats! :)

LO is almost 3 weeks old and i keep hearing that 10-15 min per side should be enough. She seems to nurse much longer than that, but usually only one side at a time. Sometimes she'll still take both, but I think she's more comfort nursing sometimes than actually eating,

Both baby and your boobs will adjust... they are both still learning how to feed!! :) But it sounds like you are doing great. If he's eating enough and gaining weight and having enough wet diapers then I would say don't worry about lengthening the feedings.

AHHHH congrats again btw ;)

Every baby is different and it sounds like your supply is good. If he is only nursing on one side and seems satisfied after that then he is probably getting enough. You don't have to nurse on both sides each time (although that is what the nurses at my hospital kept telling me) and there is definitely no standard for how long they should nurse on a side each feeding (you may have a very efficient nurser on your hands). I always offered both sides and usually she would take both but wouldn't stay for long on the second side. You might want to pump the other side to help maintain production and to prevent engorgement. If he seems really hungry when you go to feed him 2-3 hrs after the last feeding, watch him closer as you may be missing his early feeding cues but catching his later ones.

Did I miss your birth?!?! Congrats!!!

I usually let her go until unlatches, burp then offer the other. She usually doesn't take the other though.
I'm sooo jealous you can pump 2oz per side! Is that during nursing or not? I'm lucky if I get 1.5 while nursing!

I'd go by poopy/wet diapers and hunger cues more than time. He'll get a bigger and hungrier belly soon!
Sometimes in the early days I'd take her off and burp her at several different points and then see if she was hungry again. If they've got lil air bubbles maybe they feel fuller.
Congrats on your little man! Happy he's here and hope you're doing well.

So our LO nurses every 2-3 hours and seems really hungry before each session. But sometimes I can only get him to nurse for 10-15 mins total and sometimes he only takes one breast (trend the past day or so). Sometimes he coughs as if he drank way too fast and so i have tomtake him off to burp him (but usually he will cough sommuch that he takes himself off). Other times he will stop suckling and be verrry sleepy I try all of the "wakeup" tricks in the book (kellymom) but he still won't go on the other boob. To cut down on him getting overflowed with milk I have tried pumping a few muns before feeding....helps somewhat.

My milk supply seems good And when I have pumped can easily pump 2 oz from each breast in 5 mins. He has more than enough poopy and wet diapers. Also when we try to top off his feedings with an ounce or so of breastmilk from bottle he rarely will take it.

So he seems satisfied but what I have read suggests he should be feeding 10 mins per boob. Thoughts??

ETA: LO was low birth weight so I'm trying to be very vigilant. Our pediatrician recommended supplementing after feedings, but again, he just won't take the extra milk! Wondering if we should call the pediatrician?
