during the newborn days, my pediatrician told me to wake my baby every 3 hours for feeding. i followed this advice and deeply regret it. i should have just let my LO sleep (we had also been making sure he was getting enough by supplementing nursing with bottles so i should have been more comfortable that he was getting enough).

@MamaMagpie: If he's nursing constantly throughout the day, this is probably why he's sleeping so long at night... because he's got all the calories he needs. Also I've heard that formula fed babies sleep longer at a younger age, so it could be that too. I wouldn't worry about it ;)

@MamaMagpie: in the future you can also pump at times like that- you'll be amazed how much you can get! I would only pump for less than ten minutes so I'd still have some for her when she woke up, since I never knew how long I had, and I'd get twice as much as I usually did.

Thank you, ladies! It's just such a strange feeling because during the day he nurses constantly! I'm super engorged right now, though, and think I may have just heard him poop, so I may turn on a light and see if that rouses him. After I finish doing my happy dance, of course ;-)

What time is it? If he just slept 7 hours at night, before you do anything, do a happy dance because that's awesome! Then I wouldn't necessarily wake him but would just start doing louder things more likely to make him stir. Are you really uncomfortably full! That's another issue- if so I could see waking him since you are still establishing your supply.

I hope you got a good sleep!

Let him sleep!! He will wake up when he is hungry. Count your lucky stars he is sleeping that long at this age!

I just asked this question yesterday! Everyones responses reassured me that its okay to let her sleep. Since she was 3 weeks she has been sleeping around 7-8 hours straight. Last night she did 9 before waking for a feeding. She is gaining weight really well and has extended awake time in te afternoon so I let her sleep.

DS is going to be 5 weeks on Sunday and has currently been asleep for seven hours. He's gaining weight well, and weighs enough that our ped has said I don't need to wake him to nurse, but I'm worried that it's been too long since he's eaten. He's been EBF until four days ago when we introduced a few ounces of formula at the bedtime feed in order to give me a break from his every-45-minute-feeds.
Should I wake him? Attempt a dream feed? Do nothing and trust he will wake when hungry? Ugh FTM status is so worrisome!
