@yin: wow! very interesting!! 24 lbs is so teeny - what a little cutie! well, I guess I will see how big the 18-24 mos pants are when they arrive, and I can always exchange them for 12-18 mos if they seem huge.

We usually have two sizes out at the same time. So he has had 9-12m and 12-18 m out for over a year now. We just retired the 12m and added 24m and 2t. I expect him to be in 18m this winter. Tops we wear long so those I would by 24m but pants we buy to fit. Shorts, he's still in 12m because of potty training and being in underwear instead of diapers. He is 2 1/4 years old.

My 27 month old is tiny at 24 lbs. He still hasn't grown into the 18-24 month clothes from the Gap. I bought him a pair of cargo shorts recently, and they are just so big on him. I adjusted the waist to fit, but it still doesn't look right. Shirts are also too big, and I'm hoping he will fit into them this fall/winter but not counting on it. I feel like he has been wearing 12-18 month clothes for the past year. Okay so my kid is extra small... he is wearing pretty much the same clothes from last summer.

@Mrs. Pen: it really depends on the child's body type. 18-24 is still huge on olive --- the overall fit more than the length -- even though it's skinny jeans.

kids grow a lot over the summer so who knows!

@Mrs. Bee: we'll see! I can always exchange for the 12-18 mos if they seem massive :) I just don't want to spend the money on pants if they'll only fit another 2 months; especially since it's still summer.

@Mrs. Pen: gap was true to size through 12-18 months, then 18-24 months was huge in the waist and length. olive couldn't even wear them cuffed!

but maybe it will fit cobi cuffed if he has a big belly! olive is quite slim.

@Mrs. Bee: The 12-18m pants he fits into perfectly right now are gap. I find that gap runs big generally too, but he seems to have almost caught up as far as pants go. Isn't that weird? I did get a comment not long ago that his stomach is still really big for a baby... I thought it was still normal-looking! Maybe that's why..

@Mrs. Pen: gap pants tend to run a little long. i've always had to size down for charlie and olive. olive is on the taller side so she is more true to size, but her 12-18 pants still fit her fine at almost 22 months. she is 21 pounds so even tinier than your little man!

her 18-24 pants are way too big on her. but tops she is true to size. i've found that generally the case with most of the brands.

@Mrs. Bee: @winniebee: Interesting... I ended up buying mostly 18-24 mos pants during the Gap 40% off sale because most have adjustable waists and you can cuff the pants. I bought mix of 12-18/18-24 tops.

@SeptMomma12: I have a small little man! 17 months, 31 inches and 22.5 lbs!

@bpcmarj: I took advantage of the 40% gap sale and got mostly 18-24 mos, and just three 12-18 mos tops.

Same as what bee said - tips I'd size up but bottoms keep him in 12-18. T still wears 6-12 pants and he's 14 months but tips he wears 12-18.

Perfect timing, I was just asking my mom about an hour ago what she thought I should do for fall sizing! LO is 10.5 months and has outgrown Carters 12 months for the most part (or needs a onesie extender), but Gymboree and Gap 12-18 months is fitting perfect right now. He's definitely slowed down his eating a bit lately, so I'm wondering (hoping!) if the crazy growth will slow down too. I think I am just going to go with 18-24 month stuff for fall so that I know it will get me through most of the winter as well. My mom pointed out that I can always roll the pants if they are too big, or layer shirts. I just don't want to spend money on 12-18 month cold weather stuff and then have to buy it all again bigger!

How big is your LO? Mine was 31 inches and 23lbs 10oz yesterday at the doctor.

Ugh, I am trying to figure out what to get, too. P was not in 12-18m for very long (at least not at gap or old navy, h&m she is still in 12-18). I would say maybe a couple of months this winter. She's been wearing 18-24 since Christmastime I think, though things were big. Some things she is already in 2T and others 24m is huge!! I have taken to just buying her clothes as she needs them because otherwise the sizing can be way off.

I would say for winter tops, you can go bigger than you think you need. You can always roll the sleeves up or layer a onesie that fits well underneath it. Same for pants in that if the waist is adjustable, get the longer ones so that he can grow into them. Good luck!

@Mrs. Pen: She's unpredictable but I guess she's more the type to have big spurts and outgrow things right away. She grew 2" and 3lbs between 12 and 15 months.

I think we're doing 24m for fall, a mix for winter and 2t for spring. She's just at the bottom edge of the 24m range right now, bordering on them being too big. She's 16m old.

We have crazy weather here too and Im planning on layers. I tend to buy lots of t-shirts, cardigans, hoodies and sweaters and then pair them with skirts, tights and jeans or jeggings.

@zippylef: Does C have a lot of growth spurts? Cobi has always been on the smaller side and gradually grows into next sizes instead of having growth spurts into the next size. Which makes it hard to estimate! Especially since our seasons are polar opposites - I NEED to buy lots of layers and heavy clothing for winter, but shorts and tees for summer! I'm thinking just get 1-2 pairs of jeans/pants in 12-18 and the rest 18-24? And maybe a mix of 12-18/18-24 tops.

I'm torn... Should I buy 18-24 mos for fall/winter for J, or keep him in 12-18 mos? He didn't grow into 12-18 until less than two months ago. And now he is fitting into that size nearly perfectly. He has a few 18-24 mos pieces that are huge on him. He was in 6-12 for 4-6 months. I'm wondering if he'll be in 12-18 most of the fall/winter?
