30-40 minutes per side at that age. Now at 3 months 5-20 minutes. I miss being able to watch whole TV shows while nursing.

My LO wasn't an efficient nurser and we had issues with supply/weight gain so she would nurse 20 minutes each side, sometimes longer, which meant that feedings usually took close to an hour. That was until she was 3-4 months old.

By the time she was maybe 7-8 months old and eating solids well, a full nursing session would be about 15 minutes unless she was comfort nursing and then it would be until Mommy says enough. :)

Hang in there! You are doing great. I remember DH telling me he told his coworker who was breastfeeding at the time how long it took me to feed LO and she was shocked. She said something to me about it too. I was a little embarrassed but I think it's more uncommon to have a quick nurser!

Mine seems to be a slow nurser and I def do not have a fast letdown but I think 15 min each side is sufficient and any longer is comfort. DD is 10 weeks.

My LO is 4 weeks and I had the same issue until an IBCLC suggested that I hand express off the first let down then let him latch. My second let down is less intense so he can easily nurse through it. It worked like a charm and after a week he had figured out how to deal with the water fountain (except for the first time I feed in the am since I'm so engorged then).

@Mrs. Blue: have you tried unlatching him once you start to let down and letting the milk spray into a towel, and then re latching when it slows? That would help with the amount of air he takes in.

By 6 weeks, LO was only nursing about 10 minutes on 1 side, about 4 or 5 on the other.

At nearly 5 weeks LO2 nurses anywhere from 5'-25' depending on hunger and mainly time of day. We also have to burp 2-3 times during a normal daytime feed. Poor girl often drowns in milk.

With LO1 starting at 6-7 weeks he was usually done by 5'-10' max. He kept that pace until he weaned at 13.5 months.

I think it totally depends on how efficient your baby is. Logan is two months now and usually only nurses for about 10-15 minutes unless he falls asleep.

@Mrs. Blue: H sounds like he's doing the same. I had the same experience with E as well, so no experience to fall back on. I'm basically a worthless comment. :)

I wish I knew when I could pop him off for transitioning to comfort nursing, because H could basically stay latched on forever.

@Mrs. Blue: I can't give you a break down but I know there's a wide range of normal. DD would nurse anywhere from 20-45 minutes up until 5-6 months! Then it got shorter.

I don't remember what it was a few months ago, but he is now at 15-20 mins at 4 months. I only feed one side at a feeding. If he is very distracted, he may take a little longer.

Our babies are about the same age and she usually nurses for 10-15 mins on one side during a feed. But we too have to stop to burp and she will poop at some point too. So it could be 30-45 mins total.

BFing is going really well this time, and I'm so thankful. Baby boy is not quite 3 weeks old right now, and it still takes at least an hour to an hour and a half to feed him, with probably an average of 35-40 minutes of time actually nursing. To be fair, I seem to have an overactive letdown, so he latches and unlatches multiple times to couch, choke, cry for a second, etc. He also has to be burped multiple times since he takes in so much air latching and unlatching.

I know it's normal for feedings to take a lot longer when babies are tiny, but I'm curious when feedings start getting shorter. I'd love to hear an estimated timeline of how it went for your LO. For instance, at 2 months it was this many minutes, at 4 months, or whatever time frames you happen to recall a rough estimate of how long feedings were.
