with my first i mistaken the soreness for normal pain and found out 2 days later I had mastitis! i looked then and I saw my skin was red and warm. with my second I asked a LC to help because I was so scared of that pain again...she helped me with the latch , with the hold and suggested Silverette for the soreness and ...it was great! i was engorged for 2 days when my milk came in but no soreness at all and especially no mastitis!!! good luck!

@sorrycharlie: Aaw... glad all is well though. :) Maybe pump a little to help with the engorgement but not as long as you would if you were to up your supply. Maybe just a few mins to 5 minutes after you nurse. Newborns just aren't as efficient in emptying your boobs, especially if they are born a little bit early. I was lucky that I only got mastitis once, but it was just so painful and stressful b/c I wasn't a big milk producer so I was so worried I'd lose my supply. Hope you get some relief soon.

@sorrycharlie: maybe this is old new to you, but you could try taking lechithin to prevent clogs.

I would pump for maybe 10 minutes or so to relieve engorgement. You'll only create an oversupply if you're regularly pumping. But for the first few days I'd try to just make yourself comfortable. Also try to nurse every 2 hours, that'll keep them from getting too full.

For about a week, I had to pump for about 5 minutes and then put him to the breast. He just couldn't latch especially in the morning after 4 hours of sleep.

@sorrycharlie: I think my engorgement lasted a few weeks before it settled down. Are both breasts sore??? I mean they were tender to the touch a little. BUT I got mastitis when she was less than 2 weeks old! I can't remember how sore i was. I just remember it hurt one time in the middle of the night when she nursed and I woke up the next morning with fever and chills. There were probably signs but I chalked it up to normal breast engorgement stuff. I only got it in one breast.

Hope its just normal stuff and you don't get mastitis!!!

@avivoca: Ugh. I had thrush at 6 weeks, but all I remember is how excruciating letdown was while I had it.

@erwoo: She was born on Tues :) a little earlier than expected! I have been trying to massage but I have to hold her head and my boob to keep the latch (her mouth is insanely tiny) so it's been tricky. I'm afraid to pump and create an oversupply like I did with my older DD.. Just hoping "this too shall pass"?! Lol

If you're worried massage while you nurse on each side to make sure and pump right after you nurse. With my second I want to say a week or two. Congrats, btw! Did I miss an announcement? I haven't been on this past week. :)

It is hard to remember! I think that it was about two weeks last time. I know it gradually got better and I made an effort to really let my nipples dry out before covering them back up.

I swear I have PTSD from blocked ducts, mastitis and thrush with my older DD.

How long did your engorgement soreness last? I can't remember! Baby was born Tuesday morning, milk came in Thursday night, and I've been engorged since Friday morning.

I am mainly terrified to miss a blocked duct and mistake it for just normal soreness. I don't feel like I have one giant clog but more all over soreness.. Maybe?

Tired. :)
