It's thrown me for a loop over the years. When our first was born, my MIL was so into it. Since we had our second, she and my FIL aren't into talking to the kids at all. They are so uninterested in their grandchildren. It's just mind boggling to me. They seem even less interested in their adult son's life too. They wouldn't go more than 24 hours without contacting me somehow. DH and his family could go weeks without talking though. There have been times (before DS) where his family wouldn't contact him for over a month. I get a text message if I haven't been in contact with them for awhile. My husband's gone a long time without contacting his parents. We had a stretch of a few months where they never called to FaceTime with the kids or anything. He has a new girlfriend, and has kind of disappeared. I recently had one of the hardest times of my life (intense morning sickness and generally feeling awful during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy), and I would have appreciated his usual encouragement. He's checked in ONCE since January. What bothers me about my dad's lack of communication is he tells my extended family that we chat all of the time (and he does think comments on FB and Instagram are a suitable replacement for actual communication). He didn't tell me that my grandfather's health was deteriorating rapidly - likely not living more than 6 months - but he communicated to my family that I *did* know what was happening, so no one reached out to let me know. It's like a psychological problem with him, and it's really, really odd. He has no idea we know the sex of our baby, my husband cut his long hair (silly), details about our upcoming move, or any updates with our 3.25 year old who is AMAZING right now. It's really sad to me, but I can only reach out so many times before realizing the other person has to try too. My husband has a standing phone call to his mom every monday and then they text during the week as needed. My father on the other hand he and I talked maybe once every 3ish months. I text my sisters frequently, but I am not very close to my parents anymore. I spent a lot of time as a kid, teenager, and young adult taking care of them (not because they are disabled, but more so because they have made bad choices). So now that I have my own little family, I've taken a break from their drama. We communicate about once a month. Not everyone has the luxury of a close, healthy relationship with their parents into adulthood. I don't think that is weird or crazy. They could go weeks without talking (and sometimes do). I usually talk to my family at least once a week, and text photos of my son more than that. Although I'm pretty much always the one to contact them. It actually kind of annoys me sometimes because if it's been longer than normal, they'll say, "It's so nice to talk to you, you should call more often!" And I'm like, "Uhhh, you can call me, too..." Then we usually don't see them on weekends to give them a "break". But we're regularly sending pics/videos through texts. We probably talk to his parents a lot less; can probably go a month without contacting them? I think DH does send pics/videos to his mom, but she doesn't usually respond (she does look at them). I think if I went more than 2 days without calling she'd call me. My husbands family doesn't chat. They mostly only talk on bdays/holidays. If he didn't call though I doubt they would. If we missed a day we would both assume the other was dead! Dhs parents talk to either or both of us probably almost daily, maybe ever other day. Just via FB messenger usually. My dad... once a week or so he wants to get together. But when he didn't live close he would go weeks. He hasn't talked to my sister since Christmas because she refuses to be the first one to reach out... so he just hasn't either. So weird. Usually by email or text and then I call her every couple of weeks. I haven't talked to my Dad since January probably, and he hasn't tried to contact me during that time. We usually talk by phone or FaceTime, occasionally text too. DH mostly texts his parents and I think he can go weeks in between. His mom is super anti social and also incredibly easy to offend. So if he says the wrong thing she might stop responding and he won't hear from her for weeks. And one time he was taking to her about whether if we move to FL she might want to move too. She said she'd rather be near her daughter (who admittedly needs more help) and she told him, "A son's a son until he takes a wife, but a daughter is a daughter for life." I usually see my dad every week and we also have a family text group going with my siblings but no one is a big chatter like my mom. My ILs don't call us ever. DH initiates all contact and requests for visits. He calls if he doesn't hear from me after 2 weeks. Sometimes it's on purpose, and sometimes it's because we have a 7 hour time difference, so it can be difficult to coordinate. My DH talks to my ILs at least once a week, sometimes more often, but they are in the same time zone. I think they would definitely call if they didn't hear from him after a week. That said, I don't think it's that weird that in some adult child-parent relationships the parties don't speak often. They would contact me after 2-3 days tops if they didn't hear from me. DH and I can go months without talking to our dads. My dad just isn't very talkative. In person our relationship is fine. My DH's parents are divorced and he saw his dad once a year. Their relationship is pretty awkward.
