DD only gets a bottle 2 to 3 times a week or so and even at that 6 is perfect for us. so I would guess you need at least 10?

I wouldn't get too many to start with. You never know what kind your lo will like, so you may have to try a few out.

We have around 12 bottles because I got tired of washing dishes 3 times a day! But I agree with PPs, you should find out what kind of bottle you/your LO likes before buying too many of the same ones.

@jessiejo17: no I think those reasons make sense. I think there just isn't enough information that typically pumping is harder and requires more diligence and time. Just keep an open mind about it and see how it goes!

@Thehistoryofus: We decided this for a couple reasons
1) I'm going back to work and do not want her to become dependant on the boob and want her to take a bottle at will from anyone (DH, daycare, me, ect.)
2) We want DH to be able to be involved in the feedings so he feels involved in the whole parenting process.
3) Honestly the thought of BF freaks me out and I would prefer the extra work of pumping than having a baby attached to my chest, so the sooner I pump the better in my mind.

I know the last one is unconventional and in some people's mind outrageous, but that's always how I felt. I would probably formula feed if it wasn't such a healthy benefit for my baby to have breast milk in the beginning.

I nursed for most of the 12 weeks I was home and then went back to work and nursed at home, pumped at work. We went through a few different kinds of bottles, but ended up with 8-9 that we had in rotation. I also had bottles that came with my pump, so I would pump into those and then transfer/freeze each evening. DS took 4 bottles to daycare each day.

You will want to register for 2-3 brands and 2-3 of each of those. From there you can buy more as needed.

I ended up with a TON of bottles (but they were the cheap kind). We had a 2 day supply. Every day LO would take 4 bottles at daycare and then I would pump into 6 bottles (3 pumpings per day, two sides). And that did not include the 3-4 times I breast fed her directly when we were together.

Is there a reason you want to go to pumping? Usually once you get through the first 3-4 weeks that are the hardest, BFing isn't that bad and pumping can decrease your supply if you aren't super diligent?

@jessiejo17: At this point since you dont know which bottles your baby will like you can just get a few of different brands. We started out with the playtext drop ins and you dont need to have too many of those since the inner liner is disposable

Good to know, I have 3 Avent and I registered for Dr. Browns, I was thinking 9-10 was a good number to have on hand.

We have 4 Tommee Tippees 1 Avent and 3 Playtex. I guess it depends on how often you want to wash them. When my daycare girl was formula fed her Mom just left 1 bottle at my house and I washed it after each use with no problem. DS had 3 bottles and that was enough for us because I also just washed them after each use. So it all depends on how often you want to wash them. We don't have a dishwasher so washing them wasn't a big deal.

I registered for 6, but 3 of one kind and 3 of another, since I don't know if LO will have a preference. I figure once I know that, I"ll get a few more of that type.

We had 12 bottles on hand early on. (DD ate approximately 8 times per day, so we had about 1.5 days worth of bottles on hand. Now she takes 5 bottles per day, and we have 9 bottles on hand.

I mostly breastfeed my LO except for one evening bottle that my husband gives to him, and then we use bottles when we're out and about on the weekends. We have 3 bottles that we rotate through right now, and sometimes that's not even enough - I feel like I'm always washing them! I'm not buying any new ones, though, until he starts eating more than 4oz (we started off with the Playtex nurser drop-ins).

To give you an idea we have 5 (bring 4) for daycare when M is bottle fed. Then she nurses once in the am, probably 1-2x in the evening. And that's not counting middle of night feedings.
I would say minimum of 8 and that's washing bottles every night.

I plan on breasfeeding for the first 3-4 weeks and then switch to exclusively bottle feeding with breast milk. How many bottles do you think I will need to have on hand?
