@bluestriped bee: I would do at least 12 to start. I know dr Browns now makes bottles that can have the middle parts removed as the baby gets older so you can continue to use their bottles without so many parts. They are a lot of parts but I thought they were really worth it and bought for my October baby too. :)

I use Dr. Browns and really like them. I would definitely have 1-2 extra for each baby per day. There's nothing worse than having to wash a bottle when the baby is crying for formula!

I also definitely agree with using dishwasher baskets to wash all the parts. Everything comes out perfectly clean! Get plenty of drying racks, too.

Congratulations, by the way ❤️

@bluestriped bee: We got a million little bottles from the hospital, and I use them to store milk in the fridge before I either use it or move it to bags for freezing. Get as many as you can; they're super handy to have!

Also, for what it's worth, the LC recommendation of dr Browns bottles is based on the shape of the nipple, not gas issues. But they really are a lot of parts if you don't use the dishwasher.

Do you have a dishwasher? If you're not opposed to putting plastic through the dishwasher (I know some are), get a few dishwasher baskets for the top rack! We use Dr. Brown's bottles and have never found them a pain bc we just run them through the dishwasher - the oxo tot one fits the parts from at least 4 Dr. Brown's bottles.

@twodoghouse: true! Good point!

@regberadaisy: yup, I'll be pumping. Oh, good to know I can pump right into the bottles.

@bluestriped bee: w ill you be pumping? I pump directly into dr brown bottles to save bottles that need washing. Get caps! What size bottles are you using? I don't have unused 4oz Dr Brown but I do have 8oz.

We had a million - probably 24? of the 5 oz size plus a bunch of 2.5 oz because that's what they started on. We didn't move fully to 8 oz bottles until around 9-10 months, so we only had 8 of those. I know it sounds like overkill, but there's nothing worse than having two upset hungry babies and finding that all your bottles are dirty. For the most part we've always washed in the dishwasher once per day.

@sunshineandsushi: Thanks for the tip. I think I found someone locally that has 15 of them.

I do have some disposable bottles called 'snappies ' that fit my medela hospital pump and have a snap cap. I'll see if I can get a bunch from the hospital. I think these will work while the BM is stored in the fridge and before it is mixed with the fortifier. I don't have an over supply yet to freeze.

@bluestriped bee: a day and a half is the absolute minimum I would keep on hand. Also, I bought those super cheap Gerber 8 oz bottles to pump into, in addition to the babies' bottles. No way around it, there will be a LOT of bottle washing!

@Truth Bombs: yeah, as I was writing this, I was thinking that maybe 2 day's worth might be better but wasn't sure if it was really that necessary. 20 bottles, though? I wonder if Costco has a twin supply pack! ;) I am wondering if I can find someone local that has them used to save some money.

I would have at least two full days worth. Yu never know when baby will be having a bad nursing day or not stick exactly to schedule and you'll use more bottles than expected. Also, the Dr Browns bottles are great for gas but they are a huge pain to wash because they have so many parts. So you'll want extras if you need a rest from all the constant washing.

Also, not what you asked, but multiple LC's I've seen have highly recommended the Dr. Browns bottles.

I would have enough for at least a day. It gets really old washing them multiple times per day. We have 10 and it's been a good number.

Right now, both babies will be BF 3-4 times a day and the other feeds will be pumped BM with formula or fortifiers or formula alone. Each baby will have BM fortified with something different but if I don't have enough BM pumped, they'll be on the same formula.

Should I have enough bottles for one day worth?

I'm told they will eat between 6-8 times a day and if I BF them 3 times a day, I'll need to bottle feed them 5 times. If I only wash once a day and between two babies, I'll need 10 bottles.

Thankfully, they are using the same bottle (Dr. Browns) that has been approved by the feeding specialist.

Oh, how many nipples? 10 as well? Baby girl was on ultra preemie nipple but they both are on Dr Browns preemie nipples now.
