I only had enough inserts for single stuffed diapers. We did not use cloth at night for very long because my daughter is such a heavy wetter and quit cloth a couple of months ago because doubling up during the day made it so she could take her diapers off. She was constantly peeing out of them. If I needed to double up, I had a few hemp doublers.

@DesertDreams88: we never ended up needing to double-up with our inserts, so having twice the amount seems like a lot to me! I'd go with getting one for every actual diaper that needs one, plus another 6-8. Then, if you find that's not enough once he is here, you can get more.

I have about 25 diapers so I have maybe 40 inserts? 25 regular ones (that they came with), about 6 overnight hemp inserts and a few random extras for if I reuse a diaper if it is only wet.

I am hoping to cloth diaper with the size 1 applecheeks as soon as the meconium is done and the umbilical cord gone. I am also hoping to CD at night. Our childcare situation will be changing every 2 months until about 6-7 months, then it will be GrandmaCare full time hopefully. Thus I'm tryang to at least do CD when I'm the main caregiver, during FMLA, nights and weekends. Optimally, I want to CD as much as possible.

So, with 18-20 pockets, is 40ish of different types and sizes a good number to shoot for? Or is that overzealous?

Are you planning on CDing right from the start? We didn't start until LO was 5 weeks old, although we could have started much earlier with the Charlie Banana and RAR. The BG were just too big, at first. He was 7 lbs 1 oz, FWIW. For the mecinoum days, I was glad to be using disposables. Some people buy newborn AIOs or use prefolds and newborn covers, but they aren't used for that long, and I thought it would be a waste. There is a market for nearly new ones, if you want to go that route.

I actually like the MF inserts, because I don't like him to feel wetness against his skin. They are bulkier though. It's not a bad idea to have a mix, as you don't know yet if your LO will have any skin sensitivities. You can use the alternative material inserts as your doubters, specifically the hemp and CBI, rather than buying specially purposed ones.

There is a deal on new 4.0s for $15, I just snagged a color I did not have http://www.cottonbabies.com/index.php?cPath=51_128

I just saw your used diaps did not come with inserts. These are the doublers/ infant inserts. I borrowed little joeys from a friend for the early days. And I used these for about a month when we started using 4.0s so they were not so bulky on her little body (but you don't really need to do this you could just start with regular inserts)- then I switched to the regular insert when she got a little bigger http://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info.php?cPath=98&products_id=765

These are the regular inserts. http://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info.php?cPath=98&products_id=718

We have BG 4.0s new they come with a newborn insert and regular insert. T is 6 mo and I have not started doubling yet. I think that is plenty. You could get a few other kinds to try them out I guess. I do use DD overnight, so I'm not worried about finding an overnight combo which may be why I just stick to the regular inserts.

ETA- We have about 30 4.0s total. I prefer the snaps (22) and send the hook and loops (8) to daycare. We have a regular insert & infant infant insert for each as well as about a dozen stay dry inserts which we have only used so far when using a heavy diaper rash cream.

@DesertDreams88: yeah, I forgot to add cotton inserts because I've heard some babies might have allergies to synthetic material... But you already have it on your radar. I have BG AIOs (Freetimes) but maybe I'll add 1-2 BG elemental to my stash. I'll see it I can get it during Black Friday sales.

Thanks for the input, @bluestripedbee, @astro bee, and @miss ariel! So far I have 6 BG freetimes, 8 BG 4.0 pockets, and 11 Applecheeks pockets. I plan to get 5-7 more new BG freetimes on Black Friday. All of the pockets are used and did not come with inserts, which doesn't bother me - I'd think I'd prefer to buy new, maybe on Black Friday.

With 19 pocket diapers, how does this sound?
20 microfiber inserts
20 alternative inserts (bamboo, hemp, cotton prefolds, CBI)
Maybe 5-7 doublers?

Or, since I don't have any microfiber inserts anyway, should I go "big" and just get all alternative inserts? Hemp sounds pretty awesome....

I have 10 Rumparooz pocket diapers, each with 2 MF inserts (small and large so you can customize absorbency, or snap them together). I love them way more than the BG 4.0s, of which I have only one. The RAR have a dual gusset to prevent leaks and are way softer on baby's bum! They are my favourite. I also have 9 BG Freetime AIOs, which again, I like better than the 4.0s. The remainder of my stash are singles with one/two inserts each: Thirsties, Sunflower Baby, Charlie Banana (very good in my opinion; not bulky, but setting the size is a pain), Bumpkins, plus a Bummis Dimple and 2 Kawaii charcoal bamboo diapers with 2 ea CB inserts. The CB inserts are super tiny and only have small leaks in the morning after 12 hrs. But they haven't reached full absorbency yet. I've ordered some Thirsties hemp inserts to try with them and the BG Freetimes. Someone on HB recommended that last combo, as it worked for them (can't remember who due to mommy brain). I wash every 2-3 days. My LO is 5 months.

Unless you are going to go for extra absorbency for nighttime or have a heavy wetter, I wouldn't bother with more than a few extra inserts, unless they are a different material. What came with my pockets are sufficient for regular use. I also use the pockets and AIOs interchangeably during the day. Once stuffed, the pockets are like disposables, and easy to use. With the AIOs you have to make sure that the flaps are tucked in, but are still super easy to use. You don't need inserts with those, because the two flaps should be absorbent enough. But if so, go for something slim, like hemp.

I know BG 4.0 come with microfiber inserts but I'm planning on getting some hemp, bamboo and CBI (charcoal bamboo inserts. I heard some people hate microfiber and have switched to CBI or hemp exclusively. I also have some prefolds and some FST (flour sac towels). I'm told the FST can be just as absorbent as prefolds and some inserts.
I can't answer you question on number but I know I have at least 1 microfiber insert for every cover I have. I'm thinking of getting 5 of the CBI and hemp ones so I have them on hand if I have absorbency issues with the MF inserts. I also have a few prefolds and FSTs, too.

I'm also planning on using fleece for liners. I do have a 3 pack of disposable liners.

We have 12 bg 4.0s and 2 aios. I think I have about 16 or 18 of there normal inserts? I feel like it's a good amount especially because I wind up leaving inserts in the dryer but there's always a few extra still in the changing table.

How many inserts is a good number to start a sizable stash with for birth through age 1? How would you break that down by type? Like, 40 microfiber, 20 bamboo, 20 hemp, whatever?

How many inserts do you have and do you think it's too much, too little, or just right :)

--------------------------------------------------------------
FWIW: My plan is to use mainly BG (with some applecheeks thrown in, they're so hard to get!!) ; half AIOs and half pockets.... different styles for different times and needs.
