@zippylef: Thanks for the info! I will have to try triple-stuffing when I feel brave...maybe this weekend. It would be nice to have less disposables to deal with if we could find something that works that is fairly easy.

@savanarunner: we use cloth at daycare! we did not figure out that daycare allowed cloth until we had already bought a few but the fact that our daycare was okay with cloth was a big plus in choosing that one.

I know you weren't asking about overnight specifically, but this thread is evolving into something to be aware of: after they get older, you need an overnight solution.

Most nights for my guy a regular BG plus a cotton/hemp/fleece soaker pad does the trick, but he has out-peed it a few times lately, so maybe I'll try triple stuffing as @zippylef: suggested.

And since @Thehistoryofus: is commenting on different brands I'll jump in too for a different perspective. My suggestion is to get your newborn stash and just one of each brand you want to try for pockets, and when baby is about 4 weeks old, start trying them out as your overnight diapers to you can figure out which one will work best for you.

Bum Genius 4.0: my favourites by far...most dependable, and snaps are easy to change fit as he grows. These are the majority of our stash because of how great they are. I also love them as a swim diaper, since the other brands have a fuzzier shell on the inside and hold onto more water, and these don't.

Fuzzibuns one size snaps: they are too hard to stuff (even though my hand is very skinny) and I don't like adjusting the fit with the elastics: awkward on both fronts

Charlie BAnanas: the tri-snaps on the legs are weird, but maybe I just don't get it, but I don't think it should be that hard to figure out...because of this I am pretty sure I get the wrong fit half the time....plus they have the elastics inside to adjust...I can't imagine how annoying it must be to go through an entire stash changing the elastic setting. This was my first diaper to hold onto stink, but my other diapers thank Charlie for that, as it indicated that I needed to use more soap (and then we were all good).

Happy Heineys: such cute prints, but since there is no flap to keep the pocket in the back, it pokes out and leaks half the time

AMP: my only complaint is that it doesn't come with inserts. Well, also they look a little feminine due to the 'frilly' edge. Such cute prints, so trim, so simple, and they work. If I were rich I might get lots of these and buy nice hemp inserts, but I'm not, so I just have one and stuff it with whatever insert is free.

Oh, and I have one pack of Kushies: worst diaper ever for so many reasons. They feel like plastic on the outside, have such a high rise, which cannot be adjusted, and they leak. I only use them in emergencies if I run out of diapers.

We have all one-size pockets. We have:

14 FuzziBunz Elite one-size
18 BumGenius 4.0s
1 Assunta Store minky one-size

So thats what, 34 diapers? I do laundry about every 2 1/2 days.

@MamaCate: I triple stuff overnight and we don't have leaks. :) I use 2 newborn liners with a regular liner and LO can last 12-13 hours without leakage. She always wears a 4.0 overnight.

At almost 10 months, LO still goes through 10 diapers a day. Our stash is up to 30 now, which is a comfortable number for us. We initially had 16 post-newborn diapers, and it wasn't enough and made me crazy. For the newborn stage, LO went through about 13 diapers/day. We had 24 prefolds and one fitted, but we also used disposables. I would say at least 26 or so newborn size.

We have 27 BG 4.0s. I have been really happy with them. We do disposable overnight because cloth kept leaking, so 27 is enough to only do laundry on wednesday and sunday. This has been huge for my sanity since both DH and I WOHM. We are able to send cloth to daycare which is also wonderful. We had 20 and were doing laundry 3x/wk but decided to buy the last set when there was a BG buy 5 get 1 plus get a discontinued color, so it seemed like a good deal.

We did not do newborn cloth diapers (I borrowed some from a friend but they kept leaking b/c I think LO's legs were too skinny).

Minimum I would say 24. For the newborn phase I would say at least 36. In the beginning they go through 12+ diapers a day, so think about how often you want to do laundry. By 6 months you'll be down to 6 or 7 diapers a day, so later on you can have a smaller stash and still be comfortable.

We waited to start with One Sizes. I have

10 BG 4.0 pockets
4 GroVia Hybrid shells and about 8 soakers that snap in the shell
5 Charlie Bananas pockets
10 Thirsties Duo Diaper pockets.

If I had to say one thing about each:
1. BumGenius - love the fit, dont like the inserts (don't hold up well)
2. GroVia - Love and are very trim fitting. Like the snaps over the velcro
3. Charlie Bananas - Love the pockets and the inserts. Tri snaps can be tough for some
4. Thirsties - love but velcro doesn't hold up well.

I did what you're doing. I have close to the minimum.

I think I had 18 NB AIOs and had to do laundry every day (but didn't mind). (Used about 12 per 24 hours) Ideally I would have had more, but couldn't justify the cost.

I have about the same number of one-size pockets now (maybe 20 one size pocket diapers) and do laundry every-other-day (but drying time is sooooo much faster than AIOs). (Use about 7 per 24 hours)

Plus, for a little while I did the one size pockets at night while doing NB AIOs during the day.

We're planning on doing gDiapers by day, and BumGenius overnight. I have:

* 6 BumGenius
* 6 small gDiapers + 14 cloth inserts
* 8 medium gDiapers +24 cloth inserts (m/l/xl)
* 6 large gDiapers

I am trying out cloth diapers right now, and my LO is 5 months old. There is a website called http://www.jilliansdrawers.com that lets you "test out" cloth diapers for 21 days for 10 dollars (you have to pay up front) to really decide what kind of cloth diapers you like. There are about 5 or 6 that I like and that's enough for about one day, so I would say no less than 12 if you want to do laundry every other day. But I totally recommend looking into http://www.jilliansdrawers.com for the trial package, that I know they have a new born package too. Good luck!

We use all in one, one size. We have 30, which is more than anybody would ever need. But I get migraines so I like to have extra in case I'm not feeling well and can't do laundry. I do laundry every other day, and like I said, I have more than enough. It's also nice in case LO is having an extra poopy day.

We didn't use any newborn sized diapers (I was too overwhelmed with the rest of the newborn/new mom stuff to even think about doing cloth diaper laundry the first couple of weeks), so here's my stash breakdown for our LO. We started a few days before she was 3 weeks old (and was about 9 1/2 lbs at this point):

6 BG 4.0s (pockets)
5 LotusBunz (pockets... kinda like BG rip-offs)
4 Tots Bots Easy Fit (all in ones)
5 Best Bottoms shells, 3 small inserts, and 6 medium inserts (all in twos)

We do laundry once every 2 days and we use cloth wipes (about 30 total). I have the Prince Lionheart Warmies wipe warmer, and use 2 C water, 2 tbl coconut oil, and 2 tbl California Baby baby wash/shampoo.

We've decided to invest in both newborn cloth diapers for the early months and one-size diapers since we plan to have several children and they will pay for themselves in the long run.

The question is - cloth diapers do we need? Minimum number? Ideal number?

1. How many all-in-one newborn diapers?

2. How many pocket one-size diapers?
