We travel a lot, mostly to my parents house and we'll stay for 2-3 days every month or so. Also, we'll stay with friends, go camping in the summer and usually go on a trip each year that's 7-10 days. So far this summer I've been away from the house for 15-20 days. We don't have kids yet, this number will hopefully go down once we have them. In the last month, I've had 14 nights away from home (which is higher than normal). I had three wknd trips, a just us trip, a longer trip in NYC for my brother's wedding, and a few wknds staying up north at the inlaws first house to see extended family. Next year will likely be the same or more since we are planning our usual annual family vacation that we skipped this year due to lo2's birth! I'd say about 100 nights. My office is 70 miles away and I have childcare with family on the way to my office, so I end up spending 1-2 nights a week with family closer to my office. My husband travels a bit for work, but not nearly as much as he did when we were younger -- he used to be gone Monday-Thursdays every week. We also travel a lot on the weekends and try to take at least 2 weeks of vacation a year. I'm trying to convince him to move closer to my work and maybe I need to throw these numbers at him to get a better understanding of why the commute stresses me out! Before kids we took vacations quite a bit but it will be a few years before the girls are old enough to make them enjoyable. Luckily, I don't have to travel much for work. Two weeks usually with the inlaws and about one week cumulative visiting friends. No vacations and most of the time was just me solo with the kids. Summer is always busier and we tend do spend a lot of time at my IL's beach house. We also tend to sleep at my parents house if they're going to baby sit for us. So I would say we're on par with 60 days for the year give or take a few. I only do 1 big work conference a year but my husband has a few conferences and training sessions he travels for. most of the time LO is with us wherever we may be. I am in a good place with work right now and they are respecting my young family and not asking me to travel much...however, I know in the future it will increase again (one year I did 8 big international trips...90K miles...about 45 nights away for work alone)... My family lives 4-5 hours away so we always stay at least a couple nights, and we stay over at other relatives for a night or two when we go. That plus a few actual vacations adds up to my guess. It was way more when I was working and didn't have a kid. When we leave town, it's usually for at least 2 nights, if not more. I counted it up because I realized life isn't normally like this for everyone and I've spent approximately 60 nights, plus a few I'm probably forgetting about, not sleeping at my own home. This means packing up my 2.5 year old DD too and sometimes DH. (Although he works as a firefighter now so he'll spend the rest of his career not sleeping at home 1/3 of the year!) At this point, 60 nights is about a quarter of the year! I'll be adding more days onto that number in the next month but hopefully will be home the rest of the year with a newborn and a toddler to care for! How many nights a year do you spend away from home on average? I'm guessing I'm not normal on this front. (And I wish it was just for pleasure but it rarely is!)
