for us it's going back to visit my parents (also 5 hr plane ride) so we stay no shorter than 10 days, usually 2 weeks. it's a pretty big house so we have a room just for LO when he's there. i find he enjoys it more when it is longer, so he can really get to know his relatives, adjust to the time change, etc! :)
we've been going since he was 4 months (about 2 times a year or so)

@Corduroy: that bugs me too. They have no idea of the cost and time associated with it. It irks me how disrespectful they are of it.

@cascademom: Yeah, I hate using half my PTO visiting in laws every year. Not to mention the flights cost more than a month of daycare.

My in laws are nice people, I like them. However, judging based on how they treated me when I was pregnant and when they came out to see LO I know they aren't going to make an effort to follow our routine.

@Cole: I think this should be the gold standard. With my problematic in laws, we stayed 4 days, 5 nights I think. It was exhausting and tough on LO. My MIL wanted DH and I to use 5 PTO days each for a week stay. It's just not feasible with our jobs and I don't take my PTO lightly since getting pregnant and having LO.

If its a 5+ hour plane ride, we'll stay a week, sometimes a bit more, but we break up our visit and never stay more than 2-3 days with each parent/friend/relative so it isn't so bad.

If its just a little 2-3 hour plane ride, we'll stay for as short as a weekend, or longer. My FIL has a home in NC and we've flown down for just a weekend before, which was fine.

We don't even have kids yet and I try to follow Benjamin Franklin's rule "Fish and visitors smell in 3 days." Both my family and my husband's family live in the same town though so often we stay for five days and split it. Otherwise 3 days and 3 nights is about as much as I can handle!

I visit for 4-5 days. I can't handle long visits when I travel with my kids.

Same with @zippylef: we stay for a minimum 3 weeks, but usually go for a whole 4. It takes a week just to get over the jetlag, gotta make it worthwhile.

My ILs live in S America, so when we go, its usually for at least 2 weeks. Its a LONG trip, but the house is pretty big so its not too bad. When they come here though, I feel claustrophobic!

When LO was 3 months old we went to visit my family and DHs. So we left on a Saturday and flew to visit my family. Left there on wedneday and flew to see DHs. We came home Sunday morning. I think it was way too long of a trip!! I was soooo ready to be back home. We went to Atlanta for a wedding an stayed 5 days and it was a decent amount of time, but we weren't with family. So I think 5 days or less is good!

We're planning a trip to visit the in laws, probably for Thanksgiving or Christmas. We usually stay 5 or 6 days but that seems like a long time with a baby.

LO will be 9 or 10 months and the in-laws are a 5 hour plane ride away.

Did your family visits get longer or shorter once baby arrived? How long do you stay?
