I think daycare it's expected that your kid is going to catch it all, so I don't think people judge if your kid goes in sick. right now we only do music class, story time, gymnastics and playgroup so we wouldn't attend any of those is she was still coughing or runny.

I think classes for kids that don't go to daycare, and daycare/preschool are different.

I send my daughter to part-time daycare unless she has a fever. But I wouldn't take her to a music class or what have you if she had a really bad runny nose or cough because I wouldn't want the other parents to judge me.

Same as others, only if she has a fever. If she was exceptionally drainy or miserable, I'd keep her home but her emotional state is always pleasant so I send her.

@hilsy85: That's awesome that he knows how to cover his mouth! I feel for you, it's hard enough staying in this winter, getting out is a sanity-saver, it sucks when kids are too sick to go.

I bet most of the kids at that class have a cough too - you can't avoid it this time of year! I SAH too and I tend to take her to playschool with a cold, mainly because all the other kids already seem to have one. If it's a play date at someone's house I talk to the parents.

LO got sick on Saturday with a bad cold (one day of fever), and the nanny is keeping him inside all week. No gym or music classes or play dates. It is pretty bad though (as both dh and I can attest!)

We are starting daycare next week. Their guidelines for "sick" are pretty clear. Cough is not one of them, severe cough with green mucous is?

I think you made a good call. If my LO seemed sick and off, I'd totally keep her home a day or two to rest and ensure proper hydration, etc.

Hope your LO is back to normal soon.

Oh and if its a play date I talk to the host about it and try to feel it out. But I'm more likely to stay home when it's at someone's house, than class or library story time or whatever.

@hilsy85: I agree that recreational activities have a different criteria for sending/going than daycare, where otherwise people are missing work.

Runny nose I don't really worry about, unless it's really gross, and just am quick with the tissues and wipes. Cough is harder because I feel like she is just shooting the germs out! I still don't really have a good answer. But if it was daycare, I'd totally send her.

She goes to daycare unless it's really bad or she has a fever. She's getting over bronchitis now and was home for a week, but she had a fever with it (ear infection too.) But the cough is still lingering 3 weeks later.

As long as he's not acting "off" I'd take him. I sometimes keep LO home from daycare even if it's just a cold if she seems especially off or uncomfortable. If he's running around and acting normally then I'd take him.

@hilsy85: Coughs can linger for WEEKS, so I would hope people wouldn't judge! Maybe you can just explain to whoever that he's over his cold but still has a cough? I would definitely send him after keeping him home for a couple days if he's over the worst of it.

@hilsy85: Haha, full disclosure, I'm also the mom who glares when I'm at a play date and some kid is coughing. Maybe keep him home one more day and then when you drop him off if you still have it say that he's had a cold, but despite being better has a lingering cough.

You could also take him to the doctor. I've noticed that the second we step into that office and I pay the co-pay my son is usually magically healed. :meh: :silly:

@LBee: nope no fever...and definitely not flaming you at all! I would feel totally differently if I had to work so I sent him to daycare--I'm a SAHM, so him staying home means him missing music or cooking or whatever. NOT necessary for him to go.

And honestly I would LOVE to bring him to class, but I"m mostly worried about the judgment from the other parents when he is coughing :( :bummed:

Does he have a fever?

I may get flamed for this, but if I kept my son home for every runny nose, he would never attend daycare. If he has a noticeable cough (usually productive) or seems lethargic, I keep him home. Otherwise he goes and I tell daycare that we are monitoring the runny nose and that if he seems feverish or lethargic to call me and I'll come get him ASAP.

And I've noticed when I do pick-up (my mom usually does it) on runny nose days that almost all of the kids have runny noses perpetually. It's daycare life.

LO had a cough on Tuesday morning, which progressed to full blown cold symptoms Tuesday afternoon (sneezing, running nose, still coughing). I kept him home Tuesday, Wednesday, and now Thursday he is missing another class this morning. He's still coughing, but the runny nose is better...anyway, just started thinking that if he were in school, no way I would keep him home for almost a week with just a cold, but at the same time, it feels wrong to send him to classes when he's coughing this much. What are your thoughts? Especially with a cough, which I feel like can linger for a long time...!
