@Corduroy: I had a lot of luck with the app Urban Sitter. They do background checks and show reviews from other parents. I think if you sign up they give you $50-$75 off your first job. Just google and you'll find the code.

I really wouldn't want to take any days off in the first month either, to establish a good rapport... I'd just make it clear with DH that he has to make it work, or pre-arrange emergency childcare to get through the first month!

@Corduroy: I would avoid taking days off for my first 90 days since thats usually the unspoken probationary period. What usually happens with us is if i'm new on the job its just assumed that DH will be handling all the sick days til my 90 days is up and vice versa. Ofcourse if its unavoidable they will understand and wont hold it against you.

@Corduroy: glad you guys got it figured out. I also would talk to your boss leading up to a potentially long illness and just say hey if I do need to take a day to relieve DH are there any better/worse days.

Thanks for the reassurance. I pushed DH into his home office tonight so he could get a break from baby and do some work. He came out feeling better and saying he's covering for the foreseeable future. Phew.

I'll look into sick care for the future.

I've been in my current job for 6.5 years, and I took a sick day on my third day. I definitely get not wanting to, but if you really have to it will probably be okay. (I am kind of thinking DH should suck this one up, though, right?)

In my current job, I wouldn't be permitted to take off in the first three months! But even presuming the employer had a much more reasonable and generous policy, I would be really concerned about taking off in the first 2-3 weeks.

I wouldn't take time off in the first 3 months unless someone close to me was on death's door. DH expects you to take time off the first week...lol just no. He needs to pto it.

I wouldn't feel comfortable taking off during the first two/three weeks if at all possible. That said, you can't control when your kid is sick! I'm sure most employees would be pretty understanding.

If at all possible DH would have to cover the first week! When he started a new job last December, LO had to be picked up sick from daycare 3 weeks in a row and I sucked it up and did all the sick care since he was establishing new job. (I have flex job so wasn't a big deal but made it hard to feel on top of things.)

I wouldn't take off a day in the first week. Ideally in the first two weeks even. If the sicknesses keep up, I"d maybe look into emergency nanny care!

No way would I take off. DH would just need to suck it up and do it. I would do the same for him. We always prioritize based on need. Usually that means 50/50, but sometimes one of us has something more important and the other has to cover.

Today was my first day of work at a new job. My 14 mo is pretty sick: fever, crazy drooling, not eating or drinking much (so I assume sore throat), droopy. DH and I talked a couple weeks ago about DH handling the sick care for a while while I establish myself. Now DH is saying he wants to go to work tomorrow. I don't want to and won't call in sick day 2. But what if he's still sick Thursday or Friday. Ugh. I didn't expect a multiple day illness week 1. We don't have anyone else to watch him. DH and I both have fairly flexible jobs (at least I think I do) so it isn't an ongoing issue.

(LO has almost been in daycare a year so we shouldn't be facing an endless parade of these illnesses.)
