Ours is 30 with a lead teacher and a ECE (who doesn't lead curriculum but works with more development stuff). But then in grade 1, it drops to 20, with one teacher. I volunteered in both my daughters K classes and it was flat out terrible with that many little bodies, just getting used to school, and being taught. So hard.

@regberadaisy: I'm in NYC, and from what I can see, it's 100% true. The schools people think "aren't as good" sometimes have slightly smaller classes, but still seem to have at least 25 kids.

@PinkElephant: 32 kids in one room is mind boggling! gosh I remember being in primary school in the 80's and our class sizes were that big. I can imagine we drove the teachers bonkers, especially on a hot day.

@PinkElephant: where are you? I'm in Upstate NY and I'm not 100% sure but I think it's 20ish depending on enrollment.

We're not there yet but our school takes a maximum of 30 kids per class and every class has at least one, if not more, assistant, plus a teacher of course. There is no flexibility with class sizes going behind their specified maximum, as places are allocated by the council (equivalent to a school district) based on parental preference whilst adhering to the order of priorities in which places are assigned (ie kids with special needs have highest priority, followed by kids with a sibling in the school already, then kids in catchment starting with who lives closest as the crow flies, and so on). Very specific and very British for sure!

@Mrs. Champagne: See, the assistant is the key, I think. I'm totally fine with the larger number if the teacher has an extra set of hands, but I just can't even imagine being in charge of thirty 4-year-olds (some of whom won't even be four when the year starts, since the only requirement is that they be born in 2012).

@Charm54: Wow, that's great. I'm hearing that around here, they try to cap it at 25, but in popular schools classes are sometimes ending up at 32. No extra adult in the room. :(

Our provincial cap is 21 students (K-2) or 16 if it's a split class.

@PinkElephant: I'm in Australia so I think the system is a little bit different here. Its a public kindergarten, but we still have to pay $280 in fees per term unless you are eligible for a government subsidy. I'm pretty sure they are the same class sizes for the 4 year old sessions and again they have 2 teachers.

Junior kindergarten here has 26-30 kids. Usually one teacher and one assistant. (Two rotating, it seems)

@FannyMae: is this a public (free) program? That's similar to our universal pre-k for four year olds. 18 kids to 2 teachers (one certified, one assistant)

Just what the title says - how many kids are in your child's public kindergarten class? And also, is there an assistant teacher of any sort?

I did some school tours recently and was pretty shocked by the numbers I heard...specifically that these (high) numbers did NOT mean there was an assistant teacher in the room.
