I don't remember but it was when he outgrew the length of his infant car seat and he was maybe like 13/14 months. He's average height as well. I have a feeling I'm going to move my youngest sooner than 12 months at the rate he's growing! We use Diono convertible car seats for my oldest right now and I plan on buying two more when my youngest is ready to move to a convertible as well. Love them.

@mrstilly: I think that's the same one we have. the Safety 1st OnBoard 35 McKenna. I love how long it is so I'm surprised he had already outgrown it.

We had a Safety 1st OnBoard 35, with a 35 pound weight limit. DS as been around the 95% for height and weight since birth, so it was really getting heavy when he was about 9 months old. He still wasn't close to the 35 pound limit (at 9 months he was 27 pounds) but he was very close to outgrowing it by height and I was having trouble carrying him in the seat.

We switched from our Chicco Keyfit to a Britax Marathon not long after 6 months. Mainly because he was so tall. He was heavy at about 20 pounds, but obviously nowhere near the 30-pound limit.

Initially I though LO would stay in her infant seat til she was a year old,but she is only 3 months and is already very tall so I dont we will make it to the 22lbs weight max. we will have to get a convertible probably when she is between 6-9months

She was around 19-20lbs. I think we switched her over at 6-7 months. Her car seat could accomodate her until 30lbs, but she was getting a little cramped in the seat.

Our Britax Advocate seats a 5lb-70lber I think.

These were the top convertible seats recommended by car-seat.org for extended rear facing. I have not heard much about the Eddie Bauer ones.

Diono Radian (40 or 45 lbs., depending on the model.)
Britax Marathon 70/Boulevard 70/Advocate 70 CS (40 lbs.)
Safety 1st Complete Air (40 lbs.)
The First Years True Fit models (35 lbs. but taller than most)

    Graco MyRide 65 (40 lbs)
Evenflo Triumph 65 (40 lbs.)
Evenflo Momentum 65 (40 lbs.)
Cosco Scenera (35 or 40 lbs)

Are you planning to rear face past one year? I didn't read anywhere that the booster can be used rear facing.

I'd probably get the convertible, as we're rearfacing until at least 3.

@looch: I have a coupon from Target for 20% off an Eddie Bauer Carseat. These are my options. One goes from 22-100 lbs, the other is 5-65 lbs.
http://www.target.com/p/eddie-bauer-xrs-65-convertible-car-seat/-/A-13742014

@Honeybee: He is about 25th for weight. So I am kinda doubting he'll be 22 lbs at a year old. His cousin though has always been much higher and reached 22 lbs around 7 mos!

@Honeybee: I'm not too worried about him getting up to 35 lbs (obviously he won't!) but instead meeting the minimum weight for a carseat - which what I was was 22 lbs.

Our state law is 8 years old I think too. My sister is 7 and still in a booster seat

I have a nephew who is 9, he is in a 5 point harnessed booster, so it's tough to say when they can be out of a traditional seat and either just using the belt or a belt/booster combo.

My plan is to continue using the convertible until we reach the limits, then move to either a Britax Frontier or a Graco Nautilus. It depends on the car we have at that point, because one seat allows overhang, the other doesn't.

I think, as far as outgrowing their convertible carseat, it depends on your state laws? California just switched so now kids have to be in car seats up until the age of 8!

We have a Graco Sungride 35, and DD outgrew the height at about 1 year; she's now 2, and she still wouldn't be over the 35 lb weight limit (she's only 25 pounds). DS is 4 months, and I think he'll be out of the infant seat by 9-ish months because he's so tall. There's no way he'll reach the weight limit either.

DD has the Britax Advocate which has a weight limit up to 70 lbs, so she'll be able to use it until she legally does not have to use a car seat anymore. We'll get the same one for DS, and hopefully, he won't outgrow it until he turns 8, as well.

I'm not sure LO's exact weight but it is probably in the 18 or 19lb range at 7 months. We switched to a convertible seat the other day!

DS is still fitting just fine in his infant carseat, but I do think that he won't fit in it past a year old (we have a big one). I am looking into convertible carseats right now.
Some have a minimum weight of 22 lbs, then they last longer or can convert into a booster.

Whereas others can be used with infants (5 lbs) but the ones I'm looking at only go to 65 lbs.

How heavy was your LO when you switched them to a convertible/booster carseat?

Do most kids even reach 65 lbs before they don't have to have a carseat anymore?

Thanks!!
